Eagles Defeat Steelers, Meet Cards Sunday Pittsburgh, Dec. 22 - (UP ) — At a time when folks ought to be thinking about trimming trees, the Philadelphia Eagles were concentrating today on trimming the Chicago Cardinals next Sunday in the battle for the National Professional league football title. The Eagles made themselves eligible for this ornithological fracas with the Red Birds by scoring a very decisive 21 to 0 victory yesterday over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The triumph was achieved because coach Earle (Greasy) Neale decided tht a gamble on a not-too consistent pass attack was better than a running game in which Qie Steelers were versed in stopping. Neale, giving his ace runner, Steve Van Buren, new duties, capitalized instead upon the sharp passing of Tommy Thompson who flipped a 28-yard pass to Jack Ferrante and a 14-yarder to Van Buren for touchdowns. Van Buren, who had been accustomed to racing with the ball at each given opportunity, let Thompson direct the play very effectively and it paid dividends for time after time the Steeler defenders snatched meaninglessly at him when some one else was lugging the leather. The Eaglps, who are expected to to be slight underdogs when they meet the Cardinals at Comiskey park next Sunday, lost no time in asserting themselves against the Steelers. They were three-point favorites in the betting, but they played as if they needed a very substantial margin to get along. Taking over deep in Pittsburgh territory when the Steelers failed to gain in the first period, the Eagles got the touchdown necessary for victory as Thompson feathered a pass into the arms of Van Buren, who waltzed across the 14 yards it took. Again in the second period Thompson fired a pass, this time to Ferrante on a play that covered 28 yards. The final Eagle score was sudden but anti-climactic. It was produced by Bosh Pritchard who wheeled 79 yards after taking a punt from 80-bby Cifers. Their appearance next Sunday will be the first for the Eagles in the national pro playoffs and they will be facing another team which also has made no previous postseason splash in the Cardinals. The Cardinals won their right to play in the annual classic a week ago by upsetting the Chicago Bears. o Salt and pepper shakers which, according to The American Magazine, are said to be so clog-proof that they actually pour under water, have been manufactured. 0 See Dan at SunSei Rink for Roller Skates. 297t6

Week’s Schedule Os Adams County Basketball Teams Monday Kirkland at Pleasant Mills. Tuesday Commodores at Payne, O. Monmouth at Willshire, O. Berne at Lancaster. Jefferson vs Bryant at Berne. Lakers, Redskins To Battle Tonight By United Press Minneapolis and Sheboygan, leaders in the western division of the national professional basketball league, meet at Minneapolis tonight in the first crucial game of the season. The two teams have been battling for the lead all year with never more than one game separating them, but if Minneapolis can win tonight, it will be two full games up on the Redskins. The Indianapolis Kautskys pushed Sheboygan out of a first place tie last night, defeating the Redskins. 58 to 51, while MinneapolTs was downing the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, 68 to 62. at Minneapolis. Sheboygan led, 47 to 46 with only five minutes to go in last night’s game, but Indianapolis led by Leo Klier and George Glamack, finally found the range and was pulling away fast when the game ended. At Minneaplois it was largely a battle between two towering centers. The Lakers’ high-scoring George Mikan garnered 26 points to 25 for Tri-Cities' seven-foot Don Otten. Minneapolis held a 40 to 35 halftime lead over the Blackhawks. The victory was due largely to the Lakers’ deadly accurancy at the free throw' circle. They sank every one of the 16 free throws granted them. The Rochester Royals, leaders of the eastern division, and the team with the best won-lost record in the league, had a fairly easy time defeating the Oshkosh All-Stars at the Chicago studium yesterday afternoon. The Royals grabbed an] early lead and held it throughout the game. They led 30 to 26 at halftime. Rochester’s Andy Duncan scored; 16 points to top all scorers and Gene Englund was high for Oshkosh with 13 points. Rochester pulled farther ahead of the second place Anderson, Ind., Packers last night as the Packers dropped a 48 to 52 contest to the Fort Wayne Zollners. In the only other game played yesterday, the Toledo Jeeps pushed the Flint Dow Chemicals deeper into the cellar by defeating them 51 to 48. Saturday Rochester defeated Fort Wayne, 65 to 62, and Oshkosh downed Indianapolis, 57 to 47. In the only league game tonight aside from the Minneaplois Sheboygan game, Indianapolis plays at Toledo. 0 Firemen Called To Automobile Fire —- Firemen were called late Saturday afternoon to the courthouse when a car parked near there and owned by Miss Elizabeth Cramer, reportedly caught fire.
