Record Trades Expected From Major Leagues BULLETIN New York, Dec. 9—(UP) — The St. Louis Browns today traded second baseman Johnny Berardino to the Cleveland Indians for outfielder George Metkovich and an estimated $50,000 in cash. New York. Dec. 9—(UP)—Brooklyn was reported readying a new deal with Pittsburgh as the major leagues opened their annual meetings here today anticipating a • record number of trades. The Brooks had started the bartering fireworks with their swap of Dixie Walker. Vic Lombardi, and Hal Gregg for the Pirates’ Bily Cox, Preacher Roe and Gene Mauch. There were many who thought that the Dodgers were on the short end of that deal, but willingly so because of new business in the wind with Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, the Washington Senators finally disposed of Gerry Priddy to the St. Louis Browns. At first, Priddy went to the Browns in return for Johnny Berardino. That deal subsequently was nullified by commissioner A. B. Chandler when Berardino revealed his retirement from baseball. However, last night secretary Eddie Eyon of the Washington club announced that the Browns had purchased Priddy outright for $25,06'0. In addition to sending Priddy to St. Louis, the deal eased some of the criticism aimed at the Browns for peddling top players to the Boston Red Sox. The $25,000 paid for Priddy could be taken as,confirmation of general manager Bill DeWitt’s statement that his team was reshuffling, not going out of business. The Boston Braves, meanwhile, added Fat Freddie Fitzsimmons to their list of coaches. Fitzsimmons, former Giant and Brooklyn pitching ace and once manager of the Phillies, announced that he had resigned as general manager of the football Dodgers to sign as pitching coach for the Braves. Manager Bill Southworth of the Boston club said frankly that he was delighted with obtaining Fitzsimmons' services. “I’ve been trying to get him ever since I took over in 1946;,” South worth explained. At the same time he announced resigning his Brooklyn football job, Fitzsimmons denied that he had received an offer from the baseball Giants. There had been wide-spread reports that he was about to join the club as a coach. Today's opening of the major league meetings featured individual sessions for the American and National loops. Routine business figured - to take up most of the time, except for the inevitable huddling over trades and sales. One subject due for discussion was a change in the start of spring training, now set at March 1. The moguls seek to move this up some, although they promise to avoid any drawn-out exhibition schedules. Too, the Browns were due to ask for unlimited night baseball —without the requisite of permission from the visiting clubs. 0 Trade in n Good Town — Decatur 0 Delicious Pangburn’s Candy in beautiful Christmas packages at Kohne’s Drug store.2Bßt2
