> Mother Strangles > Baby, Kills Self Van Nuys, Cal., Dec. 4 —(UP) — A mother’s six notes told police today why she strangled her baby and then fumbled with death for two days before taking her own life. The body of 11-month-old Neil Ellis Wartnik was found yesterday in his parents’ luxurious Toluca Lake home. The body of his mother. Mrs. Lena Mae Wartnik, was found an hour later in a hotel room in Hermosa Beach, 30 miles away. "My husband is as guilty of our deaths as if he did it,” a note pinned over the baby’s body said. It was addressed to police. Garment manufacturer Sam H. Wartnik, 45, had sued for divorce. He said he was afraid his 30-year-old wife would kill their child and herself. The red-haired mother, griefstricken over the estrangement, apparently strangled the baby Saturday or Sunday. Then she slashed her arms, legs, thrdat and wrists. A trail of blood led through every room of the home. “This divorce is my reward for standing by you through thick and thin,” she wrote Wartnik in one note. “Well, tliis is what you begged me to do, so I’m doing it, taking my sweet, precious Neil with me.
