PSI IOTA XI SORORITY IN BUSINESS MEETING Mrs. Eugene Durkin presided at the regular business meeting of Psi lota Xi sorority, held last evening at the Elks home. Plans were completed for the annual Christmas dance sponsored by the sorority, to be held December 26 from nine to twelve o’clock at the K. of P. home. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the group. The annual Christmas party will be held December 17. The St. Ann study club will hold its annual Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Joe Wolpert Monday evening at six thirty o’clock. > The Philalethian circle of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed church will have its annual Christmas party Monday evening at eight o’clock at the noine of Mrs. Chester Owens. I IpERSONAM C. E. Bell, L. L. Hann and Phil Sauer attended to business in Indianapolis yesterday. A letter from John Stewart says his son, Meredith, has been critically ill since a week ago Saturday when he suddenly collapsed as the result of an abcess on the lung. He is a patient in Allenwoode hospital, Allenwoode, N. J. He has been improving the past few days and hopes to be able to return home by Christmas. Dick Smith will serve as commandant of Ship 48, Fort Wayne Navy club, during the next year. The club has opened a new home at 1501 South Calhoun street. o —

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bauermeister, route 2, Wednesday afternoon at 1:35 o’clock at the local hospital. She weighed 8 pounds. 3% ounces. The Rev. and Mrs. Oscar Eicher, of Berne, are the parents of a daughter, born at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the local hospital. She weighed 8 pounds, 914 ounces. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Steffen, of route 4, are the parents of a baby boy, born Wednesday morning at the Wells county hospital at Bluffton. 0 I Mishawaka Man Is Sentenced For Rape South Bend, Dec. 4 —(UP) — Emmett L. Bruggs, 33, Mishawaka, began a two-to-21 year sentence today after pleading guilty to a | charge of raping a 13-year-old farm girl. Sheriff Claude E. Houser said the man was free on ?4,500 bond on other rape indictments when the last offense occurred Tuesday. The sheriff said Grubbs, a factory worker, confessed to forcing the girl into a car as she walked to- ‘ ward her home Tuesdav night. Smoldering Fire is Extinguished At Berne — Berne, Dee. 4 —A fire which had been smoldering in the coal bin iof the Smith Brothers Furniture factory here for several days was extinguished yesterday. The fire started in the bottom of a pile of stoker coal. More than a carload of coal was in the bin and the fire is believed to have started from combustion when wet coal was poured on dry coal already in the bin.
