Once out of control, the fire leaped through an elevator shaft to the upper floors. The watchman ran through the dormitories shouting an alarm, but the flames roared through the building so swiftly that the occupants had little opportunity to , escape Some of the men leaped to safely from windows and an outside fire escape on the second floor while others were helped or carried to the street by firmen who bravely entered the building despite intense heat and flames. A total of 12 engine companies and four ladder trucks were called to the scene by the three alarms. Firemen were hampered by the sul)-freezing temperatures which turned water poured on the building to ice almost on contact. o GIFTS at BAKER’S. 281t12|
