t ‘ fc B CommentsJriO | on | Lesson Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The Proof of a Christian, 1 John 4:15-21; 5:10-13; 11 John 4-6, for Sunday, November 30. It is essential that Christians, to be good witnesses, have in them the proofs of a Christian; the followers of Christ were first called Christians, a nickname, because their proof was in their testimony; their faces shone with gladness; they had courage and boldness, their deeds silenced their objectors. V. 15. “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” The Gnostics denied the deity of Jesus and so John would emphasize a personal trust in Jesus. V. 16. “And we have known and believed the love that God has to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” That God is love is not a complete definition of God, but it is an important description of him and its expression in man furnishes a proof that man is a Christian. V. 17 “Herein is our love made perfect, that we might have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is, so are we in this world.” Just to the extent that love of God dwells in a Christian is that Christian perfect; with love, a Christian has nothing to fear as to God’s judgment. V.lB. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment, He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” A man having courageous Christian convictions manifest a proof that he is a Christian. V. 19. “We love him because he first loved us.” The amazing love of God in Christ is the inspiration of all love that stirs in our hewrts. V. 20. “If a man say, 1 love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen.” Consistency is another proof of a | Christian. V. 21 “And this commandment Our Preacher JL When one surrenders entirely to God, he accepts God as a partner; he is not alone; he needs not fear the future for God holds the future; he works in co-operation with God and therefore can not fail. He supplies the willingness and God supplies the power. Some one said. "1 know that God won't let anything come my way that He and i together can't handle. o Lesson Prayer Lesson Prayer: We pray that individual. social, and national life may be more and more dominated by the love of god. Grant, that the minds and hearts of men of all walks of life, and especially the world leaders, be more and more receptive to the love of God as an abiding •

have we from him, That he who loveth God loveth his brother also.” Loving one’s brother is a natural sequence of loving God. V.lO. “He that believth on the Son of God hath witness in himself; he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God • gave his Son.” In this verse is 1 found the Christian proof that he believes in the deity of Jesus. Not to believe in the deity of Christ is a blatant denial of God’s gift of i his Son for the salvation of man. V.ll. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” A Christian is conscious of eternal or spiritual life which has been received through faith in Jesus Christ, and hence we are sure of his Sonship. The main idea here of “eternal life” has no direct reference to time. Eternal life is already pos-' essed by believers; it it that life in God which includes all blessedness, and which is not broken by physical death. V. 12. "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” There is a big difference between a true Christian and a non-Christian; that difference is the indwelling Christ by his Spirit. V. 13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and ' that ye may believe on the name of ' the Son of God.” Christians need to be stirred continually that positive Christian proofs may not fade out. Here is found the nesessity of the Sabbath, of the Church, of 1 Christian fellowship, of good Christain reading, of prayer. 1 V. 4. “I rejoiced greatly thatl 11 found thy children walking in the 1 truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.” An- * other proof of a Christian is the 1 joy it gives to fellow-Christians. V. 5 “And now 1 beseech thee, ’ lady, not as though I wrote a new 1 commandment unto you, but that which we had from the beginning, 1 1 that we love one another.” A profound Christian tie is another proof of a Christian. V. 6. And this is love, that we walk after his commandment. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard, ye should walk in it.” A Christian’s walk is more important than his talk. ever-working force. Q | Wisdom Good Logic An exchange declares that a visitor to the poet Coleridge argued strongly against religious instruction of the young and declared his determination not to prejudice any of his children in favor of any form of religion. Coleridge answered: “Why prejudice a garden in favor of flowers and fruit? Why not let the clods choose for themselves between cockleburs and strawberries?” Clericus says: “Into the midst of a social order in which the floodgates of hatred have been torn open by the passions of war and the mistakes of reconstruction comes this message, that man’s welfare depends upon the amount of love that there is in the world. No machinery for world security, no sound economic procedure, no treaties between nations, will bring peace unless the world is dominat- • ed by men of loving hearts.”

Marshal Petain said, after the fall of France, “The road that the Nazis invaders traveled into France was prepared by three fifth columnists — immorality, alcoholism, irreligion.” These same three are at work in our country today. Abraham Lincoln said the greatest dangers that face America will not be from across the seas, but from within our borders. But there is away out of our troubles; it is found in the text, “If my people, which are called prayer meeting. The doors of our church are open to all who will come -to worship with us and a warm welcome is extended to you to come and worship the Lord with us. Following this he will travel into Africa and the Philippines Islands. Bibles and "all other sacred ! writings of all religious faiths and sects” may -now be sent to Japan. In addition, tracts, pamphlets, books and the like, of which fifty percent of the content is devoted to matters generally regarded as religious, may also be sent. When Sister Elizabeth Kenny was in Rome this summer on a tour of healing, Pope Pius XII sent a special messenger to invite her to visit him in private audience. Knowing that she is Protestant —a member of the Anglican church — the pope asked her to accept his blessing, for herself and for her ! work, by which millions have been healed of the agonized crippling that follows infantile paralysis. So doing, Pope Pius acknowledged that here was a living saint, — a Protestant saint. Guatemala has been spending ; less on arms. For the first time in twenty years the budget for the past fiscal year did not give the army top place. In fact, the military came after agriculture, communications and public works, public education, finance and public credit. (WP). Miracles by C. S. Lewis, is a "preliminary study” to any historical inquiry into the actual occurrence of miracles. The purpose of the book is not to explain miracles but to show their proability, its main argument being against the eighteenth and nineteenth century assumption that miracles were impossible. i * DO YOU KNOW? * » . 4 1.
