' CHURCH NEWS Joint Meeting Two organizations of the First Presbyterian church will join in a meeting December 10, it was announced by officers of the organizations today. Originally the men’s club had planned a ladies’ night for its organization December 10. The plans, however, met opposition when it was learned that the Women's guild of the church had planned a meeting on the same night. The two organizations will join in one large meeting. The joint session will be held at the First Presbyterian church Wednesday night, December 10 at S o’clock. Miss Helen Hau bold will present a musical and Clara Porter Yarnell, of Foyt Wayne, will favor the audience with a literary preset! tatton. Following the program, the men’s club will provide refreshments. Husbands and wives of members of each organization are invited to join in the two-group meeting. o Officers Are Named By Commercial Club Officers of the Commercial Club of the Decatur Junior-senior high school were announced today by principal W. Guy Brown, following the annual election. They are: Jim Cowens, president; Bonnie Schieferstein, vice president: Duane Holmes, secretar, and Bill Gaunt, treasurer. Maynard Hetrick, of the faculty, is club sponsor. Mrs. O’Leary's Cow did NOT start the Chicago fire. —O— Mrs. O’Leary’s cow is a mythical animal. The great Chicago fire of 1871 started Oct. 8 in a barn by Patrick O'Leary. The exact cause of the fire has never been determined. It is supposed, however, that the original flame was due either to spontaneous combustion in the O’Leary haymow', or the carelessness of persons smoking in the barn. The story that the fire was started by a kerosene lantern kicked ot|er by a cow' w’hich Mrs. O’Leary was milking was started by a newspaper reporter. Michael Ahern, who admitted several days before his death in 1927 that he invented the story to add interest to his newspaper writeup of the fire. •' ; i■ El - i
