[i .tij-gi “ .'g—c-m Creamed On , Lesson c Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The Way of Love, 1 John 1-3 for Sunday, November 23. In this lesson we observe the outstanding quality of Christian character and the means by which it is developed. The whole of Christianity is summed up in the word “love” as shown forth in the life and death of Christ. V. 7. “Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.” The old commandment of love is new because it never loses its freshness and because it has power to make all things new; it renews the life of those who cherish it. V. 8. “Again a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you; because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.” The old commandment has become new because it is true in Christ and in you—true because genuinely obeyed by Christ and the disciples; the darkness passes away as the light of the gospel penetrates farther. The true light that emanates from Christ is the light of the world in contrast with the dim light of the Old Testament and the darkness and uncertainity of human speculation. V. 9. “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.” To profess to be a Christian is mockery if one’s profession is not matched with a life of loving thoughts and deeds. V. 1(1. “He that loveth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him.” The possession of a true spirit of love is an evidence that one has undergone an, inner change in which goodness has taken the place of evil and in which new spiritual condition he abides. V. 11. “But he that hateth his ; brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.”
Oup Preacher j w There is light because of darkness; nothing could be high if it was impossible to be low; there would be no joy if there were no sorrow; there would be nothing good, if some things were not bad; no soul could be saved if there were no souls that could be lost. It is ours to choose to live in the light of truth, on a high plain, filled with joy. always doing good and meeting the conditions of being saved from sin. Such living will make a pbrpetual Thanksgiving Day. 0 Lesson Prayer Lesson Prayer: We crave for our-

Hate is to one’s spiritual eye what a cataract is to the physical eye; they both need .removing by means of an operation. V. 15. "Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If any one love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” We are not to love those ' things in the world which are out ■ of harmony with the nature and will of God. God can live only in the atmosphere of love, for God is love. V. 16. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” Lust is an inclination of the world to seize the opportunity which circumstances present for the working of something evil. The lust of the eyes may be covetousness; the lust of pride is the desire to parade oneself. V. 17. “And the world passes away, and the lust thereof; but he that doth the will of God abideth forever.” Everything of which a wicked man may boast is transient, but the things of the Spirit endure. V. 13. “Marvel not, my brethren. if the world hate you.” We may be assured that the spirit of evil is still in the world. V. 14. “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.” It is implied here that death is our original condition —a state of selfishness and sin. From this condition we pass through divine grace into one of spiritual life, characterized by love. V. 15. “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” A murderer is a hater who expresses his hatred in the most emphatic way; a hater who does not murder abstains for various reasons from this extreme way of expressing his hate. But the temper of the two men is the same. —Plummer. V. 16. “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” To be a follower of Christ is to sacrifice for other as he did. The following verse points clearly the way of sacrifice. V. 18. “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” Expressing our love in words is very proper if our actions are in harmony therewith.
