He said "if I were to sell out today the losses would approximately balance the profits." He had told the subcommittee he went into the venture only after getting the impression from former secretary of treasurer Henry Morgenthau, Jr., and federal reserve board chairman Marriner S. Eccles that “I could not go wrong.” He said he got this Impression in a 1 discussion with Morgenthau and Eccles of another matter involving 1 investment of funds belonging to some service welfare groups. 2. Hughes tried to “curry favor” with him during the contract negotiation by offering him a postwar job ( and a house in Los Angeles. Meyers did not think the offer "extraor- ( dinary” and did not know, he said, whether Hughes’ “idea was cor- ( rupt.” But, he added, he "didn’t like it.” 3. The planemaker last year offered him $30,000 a year to act as Hughes’ personal repiesentative” in Washington and at the air force’s Wright Field, O. Meyers, who draws about $461 in retirement pay, is not now employed. He told the subcommittee his health was bad and he was resting. 4. Hughes this year refused to finance Meyers in proposed production of a “trick bicycle.” Earlier in the bearings subcommittee chairman Homer Ferguson, R., Mich., had brought out that Hughes discussed with Meyers the chances of getting the New York ban against ‘The Outlaw” lifted. Hughes said he didn’t offer Meyers anything in this connection, adding that he believed the former gener--1 hud “ovu oo’Dru 1 ad” piuitna nf
nfluence with New York mayor Viliiam O’Dwyer. Ferguson read from Meyers’ past estimony at a closed session a statement that Hughes did not of.'er any specific fee to get the New York ban lifted. Meyers yesterday ;aid the fee to him was to be $109,)00. Ferguson pointed out that Meyers was under oath both times and asked which statement was correct. “My statement now is true,” Meyers replied, adding that he had refreshed his memory since the closed session in July. o Have you heard the good news?
