35 Men Are Rescued Alter Ships Collide Four Other Crewmen Reported Missing i Monterey, Calif., Oct. 24.—(UP) 1 Thirty five crew members of the ■ crippled and burning tanker S. S. • Sparrows Point w’ere removed from two lifeboats shortly before dawn today in a skillful and daring rescue operation directed by a coast guard tow vessel. The fate of four other crewmen was unknown. The coast guard buoy tender, U. S. S. Minnetonka, radioed to coast guard headquarters here that it was searching for the four men. missing after the tanker collided with the Canadian Liberty ship, Manx Fisher. Other members of the 39-man crew were picked up by the light of torches and the flickering glow of the burning ship approximately five hours after the collision. The rescue was accomplished in a moderate swell after a dense fog lifted over the collision area about 10 miles southwest of Rocky Point Sur. Cal. It was hampered by the fact the Minnetonka, not ordinarily used for hescue operations, was towing a decommissioned coast guard cutter. ( ’ Twenty-one of the mep were picked up by the Minnetonka itself. The first 14 to be rescued were taken aboard by the 10,000-ton tanker. Colina. Shortly before dawn the lighthouse tender at Point Sur said the fog had lifted and the outline of the burning tanker could be seen dearly above the horizon line 20 miles to the southwest from the rugged shore. “Sparrows Point burning forward of bridge.” the Minnetonka said. Three other ships, including the Manx Fisher were standing by. The boats were being picked up by the Minnetonka and an 83-foot rescue ship from monterey, the former ship reported. The Sparrows Point, a 10,0ff0-ton coastwise tanker of the Richfield Oil Co., sent a distress signal at 12:11 a.m. (PST) that she was on fir§ following a collision with the Canadian Liberty ship, S. S. Manx Fisher. The Colina arrived on the scene about two hours later. The Manx i Fisher messaged shortly after the S. O. S. from the tanker that she had stopped her engines and was standing by. Later, however, she sent a report that she was “proceeding back to scene of collision and standing by for survivors.” Damage to the Canadian vessel was not known.
