Byrnes Denies Call For Use Os Force Former Secretary Os State In Denial Columbia. S. C. Oct. 23.—(UP) — Former secretary of state James F. Byrnes reiterated last night his belief that if the Russian army does not leave eastern Germany voluntarily then the United States and other nations must band together to take “measures of last resort” against the Soviet Union. But he denied that this meant, as interpreted in a United Press dispatch, that he called for the use of force if necessary to drive the Red army out. Byrnes made his statement in a speech to the South Carolina grand lodge of Masons. It was his first formal speech since resigning as secretary in January and was 'made eight days after publication of his memoirs, “Speaking Frankly.,* Most of the speech was devoted to his proposals for dealing with Russia on the German question. He urged the United States, Britain and France —without Russia if necessary —to call “now” a general German peace conference of all nations which declared war on Germany.

Veteran Berne Doctor Will Receive Award Berne, Oct. 23 — Dr- Amos Reusper, veteran local physician, will receive a certificate of distinction and a lapel pin to be awarded by theIndiana state medical association at a three-day meeting at French Lick starting October 28. All Indiana physicians who have practiced 50 years or more will get this recognition. Dr. Reusser began practice here in March of 1897. He has been ill for some time but is reported improving slowly.
