Taft-Reuther Slate Promotion Continues Press Agents Firm To Continue Boom — J Chicago, Oct. 16 —(UP) — Sen. Robert A. Taft gently snubbed the idea and Walter P. Ruther yelled “foul” but a Chicago public relations firm went right ahead today promoting them as a 1948 slate for president and vice-president. P. H. Morris, Chicago, announced that his firm of press agents would continue plans to boom Taft, the Ohio Republican, who co-auth-ored the Taft-Hartley act, and Reuther, head of the CIO United 1 Auto Workers, as running mates. Morris said in effect, that he didn’t care what practical politicians thought of the program to team the two enemies whose political and economic theories are about as far apart as the north and south poles. Morris said he had been hired by “civic-spirited citizens” to do a job and he was going to do it. He promised to name the persons behind the “national unity ticket” soon. He agreed with his sponsors that the plan seemed to be a good one no matter what anyone —Taft and Reuther included — thought about it. Taft, through his personal secretary at Cincinnati, said the proposition was “not worth any comment.” The secretary, William McAdams, said investigation indicated the plan was originated by a group of lawyers and businessmen. McAdams said Reuther’s reply had practically collapsed the plan before it started anyway. Reuther contended it was a plot hatched against him by opponents in a factional dispute in the UAW. Just this week, in an address beI fore the CIO convention at Boston, he had said: “we’ll see senator

Taft in hell before we'll sue him in the White House.” A spokesman for Reuther said at Detroit that Morris’ proposition was “a fantastic story planted by a newly-hired publicity agent for George F. Addes and R. J. Thomas in an effort to influence UAW delegate elections now in progress.” Addes, UAW secretary-treasurer, and vice-presidents Thomas and Richard T. Leonard are leaders of the anti-Reuther bloc in the UAW. They are seeking to oust him as union president. McAdams said Taft's headquarters also had “heard that it might be a scheme by a UAW faction to embarrass Reuther.” In his announcement of the scheme, Morris said “there is plenty of evidence to show that Mr. Reuther does not believe in unreasonable grievances, is anti-pac (the CIO political action committee) and is an advocate of the theory of higher wages being tied to higher production.” “It is felt by the sponsor,” he said, “that to achieve harmony at home and bring up the level of our production in order to maintain a high rate of employment, this can best be done through a welding of two personalities like Senator Taft j and labor leader Mr. Reuther.” 0 Soy Sugar Supply In Nation Normal Washington. Oct. 16 —(UP) — Agriculture officials predicted today there would be no change in the retail price of sugar when price controls end Oct. 31. ! They said the U. S. decision to divert 4844)00 short tons of raw Cuban sugar to U. S. occupied zones in Japan, Korea and Germany would be offset, in part, by a new U. S.-Cuhan agreement under which Cuba will send additional sugar to the U. S. j “U. S..refiners have been getting all the sugar they want and they will continue to get all they want,” one official said. “Supplies in this nation are normal and we don't look for’any price change this winter.” Funeral Held Today For Cleveland Singer — Word has been received here of the death of Alexander E.
