TRADE IN DECATUR from where 1 sit... /y Joe Marsh t Mystery the Missing Farms

Yep, the number of farms in America is shrinking (by a quartermillion in the last five years!). What’s happened to the missing farms? The land has been taken in by other farms, increasing the average size by twenty acres! Does this growth mean farming’s no longer a family enterprise? Just the opposite! More families own farms today than ever—only with labor-saving equipment they can handle more land, more work. That’s as it should be. The family farm is a fortress of democracy—-

First Crack Made In Paris Strike Two Small Groups Vote Work Return Paris. Oct. 16. —(UP) —Premier Paul Ramadier cracked the solid front of striking transport workers in Paris today when two small groups voted to go back to work /whilt 1 the Communist-dominated general confederation of labor stood fast in the three-day walkout. A crimp was put in the subway strike which hamstrung traffic in Paris, but a bus strike still was on, I and taxie drivers called a walkout in protest against their skimpy gasoline ration. Merchant seamen walked off all French ships in port, expanding the labor strife to a new field. Union and government negotiators hoped to- iron out the trouble soon. The labor turmoil came only three days before French municipal elections Sunday. The balloting was expected to provide the best test in months of the strength of Communists and of Gen Charles De Gaulle’s new anti-Communist party. The autonomous union of motormen, representing about 1,300 workers, and the Christian union of metropolitan personnel, representing about 2,300. agreed to go back to work in the Paris subways today. But the general confederation of labor, representing some 25,0(T0 workers, voted to “maintain its position.” Crowds of footsore Parisians gathered in front of metro stations after reading headlines saying the trains would start running at 2 I p.m. (8 am. EST). But half an hour later they walked away, disgusted. The heavy iron grills which have barred the stations for three days still were in place. A possibility was seen that the government would try to operate I some of the trains tomorrow, with the limited number of workmen available, but technical considerations prevented such an attempt today. q Baptist Convention Is Ended Wednesday Nine Decatur people were among | the 650 who attended the annual ’ Baptist state convention at BapI i tist Temple at Logansport, which concluded its three-day session Wednesday with the selection of Muncie for the 1948 convention.
