Indiana Soybeans, Corn Crop Better Favorable Weather i Boosts Prospects Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 16 —Production prospects for Indiana corn and soybeans improved one bushel per acre during September as a j result of the favorable weather; conditions and the October 1 crop report for this state indicates a yield of 44 bushels of corn per acre and soybeans 19 bushels per acre. Scattered frosts in the northern and eastern one third of the state during the fourth week of September caught some corn and soybeans not fully developed, the report stated in its crop review. However, corn production now is estimated at 190,584,000 bushels which is 18 percent below last year. Production of soybeans is forecast at 27,455,000 which is eight percent larger than last year’s crop. Production of potatoes is the same as indicated a month ago, 3,510,000 bushels or 22 percent smaller than last year’s crop and 29 percent below average. The hay crop also showed on Oct. 1 the same status as a month earlier 2,425,000 tons which is four percent smaller than last year’s crop and six percent below the average. Carryover of old corn on Hoosier farms is estimated at 20,210,000 bushels which is 29 percent more than a year ago and 22 percent above average. W’heat remaining on farms is estimated at 11,137,000 bushels or 30 percent more than last October and 8 percent more than average. Stassen Says GOP Race Is Wide Open Concentrates Work In Upper Midwest Chicago, Oct. 16—(UP)—Harold E. Stassen, candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said today that the Republican race was “wide open” and that he expected to receive most of the votes from six upper mid western states’ delegates at the GOP Philadelphia convention next year.
