The rescue expedition suspended operations last night because of darkness. As soon as the plane has been destroyed as a menace to navigation, the Bibb will proceed to the outskirts of the 100-mile area in which it circulates as a weather ship. There it will rendezvous with the cutter Duane, which will relieve it. Then the Bibb will take the G 9 persons it saved in the unprecedented rescue to Argentia. Nfld. Admiral Ed H. Smith, com-> mander of the eastern coast guard district, ordered the plane destroyed after consulting with its owners, American International Airways, in New York, the coast guard reported. The final phase of the rescue was carried out in a 35-mile wind. Waves six to 12-feet high still pounded the Sky Queen which had been in danger of sinking all night. The four-engined flying boat was forced down 840 miles east of Newfoundland, but had drifted 60 miles since yesterday when the Bibb first got a line on it. The 18 passengers spent the night strapped in their lifejack ets. The Sky Queen's hull was leaking, her left wing was damaged, and her sponsons (stub wings at the waterline) were sprung by the waves. At any moment the rescuers feared she
