I Creamed _ .DM I Commentsjwfl I :on 8 1 —LessonjsaM Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Christ the Minister of Better Things, Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:26, 27; 9:24-28; 10:1114 for Sunday, October(l2. The theme of the book of Hebrews is that Christianity is the perfection of Judaism. It is so much better than the ancient religion to which these Jewish Christians (now discouraged) were accustomed that it was worth all the persecution that was coming to them. Since so many scripture verses are used in this lesson, just a few versus Will be printed and the general subject will be treated under sub-topics. 1. Better things by sonship. Heb. 4:14-16. V. 14. "Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed of God, let us hold fast our prointo the heavens, Jesus the Son session.” The incarnate Christ was a minister of better things because of his Sonship. Mediation in the Old Testament times was through priests, but now our mediation is through Christ, our great High Priest; the Hebrew- high priest pasthrough the veil into the Holy of holies but our High priest has “passed into the heavens.’’ OutHigh Priest imparts a quality of life which the Hebrew high priest could not do. Our High Priest is in sympathy with us for he was in the form of man and suffered ail manner of temptation's. In Christ’s sympathy he draw-s near to us in love and offers to strengthen us for every te,st of life. Then Christianity is better than the Hebrew religion because through Christ we have access to the throne of grace; every sincere prayer reaches God through Christ. 2. The atoning Christ was a minister of better things by sacrifice. Hebrews 7:26-27. “For such things an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners and made higher than the heavens.” Christ was fully fit to be the High Priest which sinners needed. In character he was perfectly holy, innocent and harmless; in conduct he was entirely unstained, separate and far removed from sinners. In official position he is exalted to the highest,
Sunday School Lesson Discussion Questions Discussion Questions on the Sunday School Lesson, Christ the minister of Better Things for Sunday, October 12. 1. By what sacrifices ought we match the eacrifices of Christ for us? 2. What are the advantages of Christianity over the Hebrew religion? 3. What is meant by the phrase "Christ died for our sins”? 4. Why do so many people take' Christ a« Saviour from sins seriously? 5. When will church attendance be increased? o Lesson Prayer Lesson prayer; We are grateful' to live in New Testament times, 1 having Christ as our High Priest 1 through whom we come to God the I Father. Grant that we may be so; loyal to our Lord that our fidelity I may be contagious. We pray for a I continual and constant, surrender of eels to our Lord and a constant • consecration Os our Will that our i sacrifices may touch our hearts i and will. |

higher than the heavens. Therefore unlike the Hebrew priest he did not need to make daily sacrifices; he offered himself, once for all time. 3. The exalted Christ was a minister of better things by supplication. Hebrew 9:24-28. Christ is our constant Mediator; not a man-made sanctuary, a mere copy of the true, has Christ entered, but in heaven itself there to appear, and now appearing. for us in the presence of God. Christ is our continuing Saviour. The offering at Golgotha need not be made over and over, for there by one act, “he put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” He is our only Saviour, redeeming us by his blood and cleansing us from ail sin. Christ is our coming Judge. He who died for our eins is coming again, coming Without sin or him or for sin in others; he is coming especially for those who have made him their High Priest to complete their salvation in heaven. 4. The triumphant Christ is a minieter of better things by his sovereignty. Hebrews 10:11-14. Sacrifices in the Hebrew religion could not take away sins though offered regularly as authorized. But the Antitype offered once for ail and for all time one sacrifice for our sins. After Golgotha came glory When he ascended from Olivet and "eat down on the right hand of God.’’ There on his mediatorial throne he still holds sway. In Christ there is power. His many enemies are abroad and angry, armed and attacking; but they can never conquer him. Indeed, in calm and confidence. he is waiting until hie enemies are made his footstool in utter and eternal rout. Christ is triumphant in that he shows mercy. In review and preview of redeeming grace we know that “by one single offering he has perfected those whom he is sanctifying.” Let all Christian’s consecration be complete. 5. An adonition of fidelity. Hebrews 9:23-26. Having proved Christ the minister of better things, the author concludes by an appeal to fidelity: Christians ought to be steadfast never wavering in their faith; they ought to be totally unselfish. considering one another, they ought to provoke (or sharpen) one another to love and good works; they were also to exhort one another, or as we say, to witness. These things they were to do knowing that the Lord’s coming was imminent.

How ought the Church function in the community? The church that lives unto Itself will die sooner or later; so first of all their must be a profound conviction that the church must serve the community. When this conviction is deep, ways and, means of functioning will be devised. Here are some of the ways: the church needs to become closely allied with all other organizations that serve the welfare of the people; the making of a community survey is of prime importance; the church need to act in all reform movements including clean polities; the planning of programs to break down all race and color prejudices; a firm stand against the liquor industry reducing its influence and power; the church ought to know the movie programs and eliminate objectional films.
