TRADE IN DECATUR —■ • < from where I sit... //Joe Marsh How to Tell You're Getting Old
Doc Walters gtrve me this formula: It's a sure-fire sign you're getting old when you resent other people having a good time. And the Doc means it hasn’t much to do with age. There are old folks in our town who get a big kick out of seeing other people enjoy themselves — seems to keep them young in spirit, with a twinkle in their eyes! And there are some others who resent the young folks going fishing; who feel that community games and dances are just a waste

of time; or who criticize temperate people for enjoying a mellow glass of beer with friends. They’re often well-intentioned folks, too. But from where I sit, the minute we criticize our neighbors for enjoying wholesome pleasures —like a game of horseshoes, a glass of beer, or an afternoon's fishing — it’s a sure sign we’re growing old fin spirit anyway) no matter what cmr age is.
Case Is Heard For Naming Os Guardian Case Opens Today In Circuit Court Judge Earl B. Adams in circuit court here today heard the case of Nora Huser against James Glick, in which she asks for the appointment of a guardian for the latte”. The case was opened late this morning and was expect 'd to consume a greater portion of the day before being concluded late this afternoon. First witness called to the stand was Dr. Robert Beavers, of Berne, who stated that he believed the 74-year-old man incapable of managing his own affairs. Upon direct examination by plaint iff’s counsel. D. Burdette Custer, he testified as to his training and experience as a specialist in neuro-psychiatry. Opposing counsel. Myles F. Parrish and C. H. Muselman, however, objected strenuously to the doctor being qualified on the stand as an expert, averring that all *‘M. D.’s” had as much training in that particular field as the

Sound Feeding Saves Grain The supply of grain and protein feed this winter probably will not meet national requirements. This means that every bit of good forage — hay and silage—will have to be used carefully to produce the most possible milk and stretch scarce grain and supplements. Tostretchyoursupplyofgrain > and feed mix, follow the feeding I practices proved through the years by good dairymen everywhere. What you’re after, of course, is the highest possible production from each cow. You want to give each cow the feed she deserves but not more than she deserves. You have to know two things definitely—each cow’s daily production and how your roughage stacks up as to quality. First—it stands to reason that a good producerrequiresmorefeed than a poor producer. Don’t guess. Weigh the milk from each cow occasionally, night and morning. Then you’ll know which cows to favor.
Freshening Cows Need Extra Care A crystal ball would be a mighty I -e*- handy thing around a dairy farm —if it worked well. But even | without a crystal ball here’s one thing I can predict: l 1 / Z v'' L Your cows which are freshening this fall will be better producers if you give them the right kind of care before, at and after calving. First give the cow a six-to-eight-week dry period so that her feed and strength can go into development of a healthy calf. Remember, most of a calf’s weight is gained in the last two months before birth. Then just before freshening, say a

It’s equally true tout the better your hay and silage the less grain and concentrate you’ll need. Good "W leafy alfalfa will normally need only a little grain added for even a good producer. But mixed hay of . average quality will need more than just grain to make it into a good ration. And hay that has been 'rained on will need a full supplement of both grain and meal plus some minerals. The principles are important any time but this year when a heavy supply of milk is needed and feed is short, they’re more important than ever.
week or two ahead of time, the cow should get a ration which has a somewhat laxative effect. Good fall pasture or corn silage will serve. But if you don’t have either at this time, oats and wheat bran or oats and linseed meal will do the job. Warm feed and warm water in the first day or two after calving is recommended, but make the feeding light. Increase the feeding gradually, say at a rate of about a half pound per day for the first week. Maybe it takes a little time and trouble, but you'll see results in healthier calves, in better health of your cows and in the greater milk production you will get from the same cows, if you take that time and trouble. « • « Any cold weather which may be sneaking up on you will reduce the level of the thermometer reading outdoors but it won’t bother the inside temperature of a cow in the least. Milk is warm when it is freshly drawn. Bacteria multiply fast in warm milk. Cool it quickly to guard quality, winter or summer. • « * Now’s the time to locate that high grade sire for your herd. You’ll be breeding your heifers for fall freshening soon. Breed them to the best dairy bulls available. Then you’ll get heifer calves you’ll be proud to
