I CommenteWl I'lM'&KMßfl Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson. Ecclesiastes scriptures for September 28. Solomon out of his experience presents the utter folly of making of first importance, intellectual, social, success and service objectives; he concludes by presenting life and divine objectives. V. 2. “Vanity of vanities, eaith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” Vanity is the key note of this book. Vanity means breath and is used metaphorically to declare any thing transitory, unsatisfying. ephemeral. The inference is that life is empty (vanity) and without profit apart from God. V. 17. "And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this plso is a vexation of spirit.” Solomon and his kin became wordly wise making things intellectual primary; in this wisdom he became vain and selfsufficient. Without a high motive the pursuit of knowledge ie sure to be 'vexation of spirit." V. 1. ”1 said in my heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore, enjoy pleasure; and, behold this also is vanity.” There is no abiding happiness or permau ent satisfaction in any thing that can be tasted, or seen, or handled. All earthly pleasure is but for a moment. V.ll. “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought and on the labour that I had laboured to do. and behold all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the <sun." The man who makes work an end in itself is always due for a rude awakening. Work is a means to an end, and the end must be spiritual if we are to be happy. V. 24. “There is nothing better tor a man. than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God." Here is presentI ed a Mfe that follows lines of least
Out? Preacher — Would you be educated and healthy? Then make good use of your time; it is the “stuff of which lite is made." Fifteen minutes spent each day in reading good literature will mean in a lifetime a liberal education. The same number of minutes devoted to the study of the physical and to the spiritual needs of the body would mean vastly more efficient and satisfactory living. o Lesson Prayer Lesson prayer: Grant that we may see God's great purpose in all of history and that we need a corresponding purpose to fit into his program. We are grateful that in Jesus Christ we see God’s purpose aud are taught the purpose we ought to have. Grant that we may truly

resistence eimply drifting with the current, doing what the majority from peace and purposeful living. V.l. ■‘Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the l evil days come not, nor the years draw high; when thou shalt eay, 1 have no pleasure in them.” Youth is the time for the making of important decisions, and not taking £od into account will mean making s ma?iy wrong decisions; life becomes mo- << and more fixed with the pass* ,Ing of years. The way to be happy, ,the way to walk life’s pathway iWith steady feet and calm heart, is to learn of one’s Creator early in life.
Verses 2-8 present in poetic figures growing old age and finally death. With the passing of year* the light of life grows dim the hands and limbs tremble with old age the shoulders bend the teeth (grinders) cease to perform their function “because they are few” vision loses its sharpness. The Preacher in this lesson describes the sleepless old man the waning of his tastes for earthly pleasure, the growing fears and apprehension, the cessation of desire. And at last comes death pictured in the poetic phrase, “The silver cord is Joseed, the golden bowl broken, the pitcher is broken at the fountpin and the wheel at the cistern and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, as the spirit returneth to God who gave it.” V. 13. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God and keep hie commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Fear here does not mean being afraid like a cowering slave; but fear is that intense desire to please God lest by disobedience God is dishonored. It is fear that makes us when we have done our best tor God that we have not done enough for our Lord.
V. 14. “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.” Let it never be forgotten that a good God can not pass by the sins of this life and that every sinner, those not accepting Christ in this life will be brought before God in judgment where every deed and even all evil secrets will be seen, in the open:’this will really announce the judgment which God will simply acknowledge. live purposeful lives, and,' a« a result, be happy. o Book Review Now to Live, by Ralph W. Sockman. is a series of sermons in which the author preaches “the way” to the full, free life that Christ offers men and nations. His themes are varied; his approaches to modern interests, personal and social are divense; his illustrations, colorful; his phraseology, appealing. o Clerious Says: Clericus says; “Salomon learned the great lesson that happiness is not something that man gains but something that God gives. He saw — probably when it was too late — that the thrilling satisfactions which have their roots deep in a man’s soul are planted by the hand of God. The cynic therefore teaches (hat we are not therefore to strive after happiness; ail such striving will prove futile. God gives men happiness when they fulfill the righteous for which they Were created.” o Mrs. Chit: 1 don't think our new minister puts enough fire into his sermons. Mr. Chit: That isn't the trouble. He doesn't put enough of his old sermons into the fire.

Good company furnishing fellowship is a universal innate desire of individuals: without any effort people seek the company of others. Little children are attracted by others of their age: youth wants to meet youth; it is a joy for the mid-dle-aged and aged to meet their contemporaries. The church supp lies the need of fellowship of the finest kind and provides company people. In many ot these meetings Dr. Mott spoke to as many as 15,000 at one time. Dr. Mott says that many Germans feel that the occupying powers are trying to crush the life out of them completely. He says this feeling is one of the greatest obstacles to evangelical success in general in Germany. The Germans felt that Dr. Mott’s journey among them as a disciple of God renewed their hope of a united world under the Christian standard. No relief from any private agency was sent to Okinawa after the war ended; that is, until 15,500 pounds of bedding and clothes from CWS left San Francisco recently. Okinawans will have their first non-military post-war contact with America through the Protestant churches. o | Church |g| What suggestions have been received helpful to a preacher? When you enter the pulpit make no apologies. If you have a message from God.de liver it, or hold your peace and have a Quaker-Meeting. Do not waste time by long prefaces. but say good things from the start; and do not keep on talking after you are done. Better leave the people longing than loathing. Leave self out of the pulpit, and take Christ in. Do not preach old sermons without warming them over, and never stop growing. Do not harp too much on one string, but give the variety of the jßible.
