Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson from choice proverbs for Sunday, September 21. This lesson summarizes the eight lessons on previous Sundays; these wise sayings have religious slants and furnish important guildance in right living. V. 23. “Keep thy heart with all diligence: for out of it are the issues of life.” The heart means the center of our emotions and is the source of our sentiments; we are guided largely by our seniments; the Bible teaches the need of right feelings toward God and man. Emotions reach deeper than reason. Vs. 16, 17. “There aie six things which Jehova hateth; yea, seven which are an abomination to hifti; haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innoncent Mood A haughty eye means a lofty attitude of people who disdain their fellows; they disobey the command. “Love thy neighbor as thy self. A lying tongue expresses dishonesty and deceit; in time this trait of character will be discovered with due retribution. Hands that shed innocent blood not only includes the murderer as such but those who sap the life out of others by suppression and means that exhaust lives. V.lB. “A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that beswift in running to mischief.” Wicked imaginations at the source of feelings are not satisfied till expresfi-ed-note the evil, the crime that results from the wicked imaginations in movies; these feelings are hard to curb; hence, are expressed : in swift feet going wrong. V. 19. “A false witness that speakest lies, and he that soweth dis-cord among brethren.” A false witness maliciously breaks the life of his fellow men and is a disturber of peace and good will. V. 34. “Righteousness exalteth a nation; but sin ig a reproach to any people,” The religious revival in Ehgfanti in the 18th century Oup Preacher Th uh « .liSEEs The man seeks to please God has an inward source of strength and satisfaction. When all without appears to combine to frustrate him, and he is forsaken by those from whom he-expected help, he draws from within sustenance which is the result of a good life. “He shall eat the fruit of his doings.” Clerious Says: Clericus says, “Contamination in our national fife is produced by political corruption, dishonesty in business, injustice in the field of industry, divorce iminoralty; if these things continue to grow in time our civilization will destroy itself. o— Knowledge must be allied with goodness and embodied in upright character or it has no positive value.

exalted England; that sin is a reproach to a nation can be seen in the world’s estimate of the late Nazi regime. V.lB. “Preach goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” The fear of Jehova means a reverence for God and a loving dieposition toward the most high. This is the beginning of wisdom: where there is no fear of God there is pride and a haughty spirit. V. 3. “To do justice arid judgment is more acceptable to the Lord -than sacrifice." Righteousness and obediance to God are superior to ceremonial worship. To do right is the basis of all character; no other rule is needed. V.l. “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riehefe. and loving favor rather than silver and gold.” The best way to have a good name is to see that the one we bear is untarnished. No wealth compensates a man if he is despised by his fellow men. V.l. “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” The boaster is both riduculous and disgusting. People listen to his mouthings, mildly amused by his conceit and irritated by his selfishness. If a man boasts of what he is going to do tomorrow, he is impudent because God may not permit him to live until tomorrow. V.l. “The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are bold as a lion.” Evil people are cowardly. The bully runs when he meets some one whose strength matches his. Righteousness gives a man boldness and makes him stand for good causes. This world would be bedlam were it not that that potency of God far exceeds the potency of eveil. V.lB. “Where there is no vision the people perish; but he that keepeth “the law. hippy fs he.” By sision is meant such contact between God and the spirit of man as brings to man a revelation of God’s will. In keeping the law one i ie free to act in the ways of the law having God’s divine approval which makes for happiness. V. 17. “Therefore to him that knoweth to good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Our moral guilt depends upon our moral enlightenment. Sunday School Lesson Discussion Questions Discussion Questions on the Sunday School Lesson, Guidance from Great Probverbs for Sunday, September 21. 1. At the same time, the political outlook is worse than it was at the time of the Nazi collapse, and the econimic situation of the average German has steadily deteriorated. Hopeful experiments in state and local governments are overshadowed by the continued zonal divisions and the well-nigh universal fear that Germany is destined to be the battlefield in a conflict between the great powers. — The Christian Century. The Rev. James Oscar Lee of Richmond, Virginia, first Negro to receive a degree of Doctor of Theology from Union Theoligical Seminary in Richmond, has been elected executive secretary of the Department of Race Relations in the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. Mrs. Frank Knox has given sl,000,000 to Harvard University to establish a system of exchange fellowships throughout the world. The contribution is based on the conviction “that co-operation between the British commonwealth and the United States of America, based upon an informed and understanding contact of the peoples of these two great countries, is an essential to international peace.” “If I were to select the one brightest spot in the world, it would be India,” declared E. Stanley Jones. Dr. Jones said that Western “imperialism is voluntarily liquidating itself at its center. India will not have civil war. One of Dr. E. Stanley Jone's i books, possibly his best, is The| Way. The book makes clear that there is a Way and only one Way for people to live, ft is reasonable that there should he away to the eternal home to which nearly everj’ one is aiming, and it is not claiming too much by reason to say that there is only one Way. Travelers are seen consulting road maps as faith is that ultimately they will come together. All the facts tend toward union.” Dr. Jones quoted Jinnah, the Moslem leader, as say ing: “In the end, I believe India will have come together even after separation.” Dr. Jones quoted many leaders from Nehru down who insisted that religion freedom would be recognized as adopted in the new constitution. 0 Peace is Possible Peace is possible if the United States and Russia change from seeking security through national armaments to seeking security through federal world government. The first steps needed are control of atomic energy and other weapons. World government and World reduction of armaments are mutually interdependent, and must come together. Then gradually the functions of world governments can be expanded to bring justice and brotherhood among peoples. If we continue the present struggle for security through power and armament we at*e headed straight to fear. Unless the United States and Russia surrender some sovereignity to a real world government there is little chance that they will abandon their present struggle for power. Certainly Russia will do neither unlees the United States takes the lead.
