limebomb Murder Trial Near Climax Bud Gollum Slated To Testify Today Santa Ana. Cal., Sept. 17 — (UP) — The 17week-old timebomb murder trial of heiress Beulah Louise Overell, IS, and George (Bud) Gollum, 21, reached its climax today with Gollum expected to repeat his fiancee’s denials that they murdered her wealthy parents. The bespectacled pre-medical student during testimony yesterday reviewed his romance with the stolid University of Southern California freshman. But court recessed before he could enter his denials that he killed Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Overell and rigged an amateurish dynamite timebomb to blow up the family yacht and hiile the crime. He admitted buying dynamite, but said he bought it at Overell’s [ request. He said he signed a fictitious name because Overell wanted the purchase kept secret. Mis® Overell dramatically denied any part in the alleged murders. “Did you kill your mother?’’ de- ■ sense attorney Otto Jacobs asked.
No." she answered. “Did you kill your ather?” "No.” “Did you see anyone kill your mother or father?" “No. 1 did not." Prosecutor Eugene D. Williams •vas unable to sdtake her story in cross-examination. The girl completed her testimony late yesterday and Gotlum followed her. Both Gollum and Miss Overell. ’ said the girl’s parents were alive ' when they left the yacht Mary E. shortly before midnight March 15 to go ashore and buy hamburgers at a Newport beach case. Gollum described his romance ' with Miss Overell as “staid.” Williams contended it was of such nature as to drive them, for lust and greed, to ,slay the Overells. The Overells. Gollum said, were aware of his romance with their daughter, approved of it and frequently invited him for cruises on their yaqjit. His story of events on March 14, the day on which he .-aid he purchased the dynamite for Overell. ' followed almost word-for-word that of Miits Ov’erell. So did his account of the next day, when the Overells died. 1 land Speed Record ■ I . Set By Englishman Says Car Hasn't Yet Reached Limit Booneville Salt Flats, Utah. After weeks of dissappointments and false starts, the burly London fur broker late yesterday got away to his first successful speed run since the war and within 35 minutes: I.— Established a new world’s land speed record for the measured mile of 394.196 miles an hour. His old mark, set' in 1939 here was 368.85. 2. — Made a new world’s record for the measured kilometer of 393.825 MPHi Cobb’s previous best was 369.7. 3. — Averaged 403.135 MPH through the mile on the northbound run of his two trips along the 14 and one-half mile straightaway. , No one has ever gone that fast before in a car. Railton .Mobil special was in the measured mile only 8.93 seconds. Cobb didn't even shop at the tire changing pit after his run to the north. He circled widely and drove "slowly” — between 70 and 100 MPH — back to “Victory Lane” at the AAA timer's stand. “It made me feel like a king for a minute to go over 400 miles an hour." the RAF veteran and world’s speed king beamed.
