Money is acid test of character. The way people act in situations inwhich profit and loss are involved usually indicate the true quality of thier moral characters. V. 24. “There is he that scattereth and increaseth yet more; and there is that withholding more than meet, but it tendeth only to want.” Wealth is to be shared with others. To withhold what is justly due either ae a debt or as a proper act of generosity is in reality stealing. He who unduly withholds from others, ends with nothing of his own, worth epeaking about, The miserly are usually miserable. V. 25. “The liberal soul shall be made fat; and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” , “Fat” is a figure for the prosperous and blessed. Such are benefited and refreshed materially and spiritually. Those who promote the welfare of othere enjoy a peace that passeth understanding. V. 26. "He that withholdeth coin, the people shall curse him; but blessing shall be on the head of him that selleth it.” This verse reflects the ugly eituation of goods ■ bought in a cheap market and held • for an exhorbitant price in time ► of need. The perpetrators of this infamy have always had the curse of their fellow men poured upon them. V. 27. “He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour; but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come up- ; on him." One should always and everywhere make doing good his chief aim; not to do eo will mark a man as up to mischief and to be shunned. , V.B. “Better is a little with right- • eousness than great revenues with- ‘ out right.” Rags with righteousness ie far better than riches with unriglHeousnesst WIU* 9H* Jhat loveth silver shall
Our Preacher Ml w Sir Winfred Grenfell says, “Man must play .work, love and worship to get the most out of life.” That means that one'e body, brain, heart, and soul must be touched. When all four sides of one’s life , are thus developed, one becomes a ; well-balanced personality. To have a strong character not one of these points dare to be omitted. Dare to play recreationally, dare to work efficietiy, dare love ardently, dare to worship God sincerely. 0 Sunday School Lesson Discussion Questions Discussion Questions on the Sunday School Lesson, The Use and Abuse of Wealth, for September 7. 1. | not be satisfied with silver; nor he I that loveth abundance tafth fnI crease; this is also vamTy" The feverieh thirst for gain rages the more its demands are answered. W’hile most of world’s wailing is over what people lack, most of the world's misery is caused by what they possess. Poverty often kills the body but riches wrongly ( used kills the soul. V.ll. “When goods increase, they are increased that eat them, and . what good is there to owners thereof, saving the holding of them with their eyes.” The more people get, the more do they require to satisff ’ them. The rich abusing his wealth r has no satisfaction except that of his pride. V.l. “Go to now, ye rich men, . weep and howl for your miseries ) that shall come upon you.” The ' mieuse of money brings misery. This truth is taught in the story ’ of Lazarus and the rich man. It is ' an awful thing for us in America L to fail to give and give more and ' more to the starving of the world, 1 for not to do so may produce world ’ nefimity. " V. 2. “Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.” 9 James assailed the rich not be--1 cause they had wealth but because they abused wealth. Misspent money which should be used for the ' Lord’s work cancels one’s steward--1 ship unconsciously corrupts the ! soul. V. 3. “Your gold and silver 5* cankered; and the rust of them . shall be a witness against you, and : shall eat your flesh as it were a ’ fire. Ye have heaped treasures to- > gether for the last days.” Gold and i silver misused will produce a torI ment like that produced by fire. > These are etrong words expressive i of future retribution. The sin of i misuse is just as damnable as the i sin of abuse. V. 4. “Behold, the hire of labouri ers who have reaped down your fields, which ie of you kept back by fraud, creth; and the cries of them which have reaped are enter--1 ed into the ears of the Lord of the sabbeth.” These rich men were so avaricious that they had resorted to fraud to increase their store. V. 5. “Ye have lived in pleasures on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.” Wanton luxury had made them victims fattened for a day of slaughter.
2. How can monej’ contribute to one’s personality? 3. What evils result from acquiring money dishonestly? 4. Why is it better to give needy people work instead of money? 5. Why is it at times of inflated prices to limit one’e purchases to one's actual needs and to save what one can? 0 Lesson Prayer Lesson prayer: We pray for such guidance and such a spirit that we may be good Christian stewards i of all our possessions. May world brotherhood of nations come as a , result of our united effort in feed- . ing the starving millions. May the United States be the Samaritan i nation of the world that God’s kings dom may come on earth and that ■ God's will may be done. i o ; Book Review The Funeral, by Andrew W. i Blackwood, is designed to help ministers solve their most baffling problem, that of serving their pari ishes in funerals. “The good name of the.
