Study Preservation Os Vital Corn Crop Expert Engineers Will Aid Farmers Chicago. July 22 —(UP)— Two hundred agricultural engineers went back to the corn belt today to show tanners the latest methods ot protecting the vital corn crop from possible spoilage. They had attended a meeting calle-i by the American society of agricultural engineers, a professional organization of the men who work for state experimental stations, federal farm agencies, university agricultural schools, grain processing companies and farm equipment manufacturer*. George Reits. president of the society, called the emergency conference when it became apparent that iMtcauso of heavy rainfall much of this summer's crop might be so-called "soft corn," corn which has a high moisture content and Is subject to spoilage. Reitz asked the engineer* to exchange idea* and information on the latest methods of drying corn and Io pass on what they learned to the farmers with whom they came in contact. Arthur W. Turner, department of agvlculture bureau chief, told the meeting about a new method of cribs forcing warm air through corn cribs with fans and blowers. Machinery experts were Invited to the meeting to discus* means of channeling ventlllatlng equipment to farmers. Other farm experts stressed the need for leaving corn on the stalk to dry, cleaning off husks and silk which harbor mold and storing the corn in narrow cribs with good ventilation. Norris E. Dodd, undersecretary of agriculture summarized the international food outlook. "Under normal conditions the present corn outlook would give us little tp worry abojit," he said "The corn crop prospect is about average and the wheat prospect is for a new record." “But these are not normal limes and people both here and abroad are vi'ally concerned about the poor condition of our corn crop. Increased food consumption here at home is sufficient by itself to make inadequate our corn prodm- , tion of the pre-war years. And al most all the importing countries have lower stocks now than al this time last year." Westfield Youth Is Killed In Accident Noblesville. Ind.. July 22 (I P) — Garland -M. Chitwood, 22.
