Strike Averted On Southern Pacific Agreement Reached, On Union Demands San Francisco, July 22— (UP)— Negotiators tor the Southern Pacific Railway and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers reached agreement esr|y today on 2(f union demands, ending a shortlived strike on one-third of the far west's rail transportation. P. O. Peterson, grand chief en glneer of the Brotherhood, sent telegrams to union locals throughout the far-flung Southern Pacific System. A. T. Mercier, president of the Southern Pacific, said he expected most of the engineers to report back for duty this morning. Trains starting after that time may be expected to maintain regular schedules, he said, but it may bo "some days" before the railroad can resume "generally normal handling of all traffic.” Company and union negotiators continued to meet with federal conciliator Thomas Bickers after the engineers struck at 8 p.m. tCSTi last night, Less than seven hours Ister they had reached a settlement.
