Dodgers Beal Kirby Higbe Third In Row New York. June 26—(l’P» Beetle-browed Branch Ilk-key, the shepherd of the Flatbush flock, got into trouble with Brooklyn fan* when he let pitching wellwether Kirby Higbe stray to Pittsburgh two months ago. but they were beginning to see today why he is called "the smartest man In baseball.** For Higbe, the big 17 game winner on the 1946 Dodger staff, has won only two games and lost six since going to the Pirates and three of his defeats have been at the hands of his ex-team mates. When he was traded to the Pirates along with some other surplus talent, the fans howled that Hickey had wrecked the l>odger pennant chances. A news dealer near Kbbets field, hanged the Dodger president in effigy on his stand Hickey calmly pointed out that when the Dodgers needed victories the most in their stretch race last September. Higbe lost three out of four games. So off Higbe went to Pittsburgh and it wasn't exactly a minor consideration that Hickey got a big bundle of cash in the deal and at the same time trimmed his pay roll of a high priced employe Higbe, still a good pitcher though past his prime, ran into his chief tormenters yesterday, suffering a fl to 2 cuffing at the hands of the Dodgers as Pittsburgh lost Its 21st game in its last 26 starts. The home run triplets of the (Hants, Johnny Mixe. Willard Marshall and Walker Cooper each hit for the loop to account for six runs in a 9 to 3 victory over the Cubs at Chicago. Dave Koslo had little difficulty scoring his seventh victory as Mixe smashed No. 19 and Cooper and Marshall each got their 14th. For Cooper it was the eighth homer in the 10 games he played on the western road trip In which he batted .431. The Beds put over four runs in the ninth.
