With summer's official arrival this week, a minute of daylight will be dropped each day. . o 0 Prom Washington this week will come two big stories . . . the President's action on the labor and tax cut bills. —«) o After all the trouble he has caused the country, John L. Lewis makes the dire forecast of "a decade of Industrial, political and economic hell,'' If the Taft-Hart-ley labor bill becomes a law. Old beetle-brow should know. o o—— The Alcoholic Beverage Commission. which will administer the new cigarette stamp tax, reminds dealers that they do not have an extra six days of grace after July 1 to place the stamps on each package. Cigarettes sold In the State must bear the three cents tax on the first day of the month. 0 —— O —— The U. 8. Senate is restoring some of the sums In the federal budget which were lopped off by the House. Action by the House in many of the cases was Influenced by politics and members had no idea that the more conservative senate would approve the cuts, which in many cases would have shut down certain government agencies. 0 o— — Thurman I. Drew has been named general supervisor for the big 111 club and youth-week show in this city, August 6-8. Department chairmen have also been appointed and many features are being planned for the three-day program. Heart Bother You Sometimes?
By Herman N. Bundeaen, M. 0. .MANY people are under the Impression that all symptoms affecting the heart are due to actual disease of the heart itself and therefore if they experience an unusually rapid beat or other unaccustomed heart action, they are terribly upset. They worry needlessly. In fact, their anxiety may only increase their heart symptoms. since according to Dr. George F. Strong of Vancouver. B. C., many such manifestations may be due to nervous tension. There is a disorder known as neurocirculatnry asthenia, not due to actual heart damage, which causes such things as fluttering or throbbing of the heart: there may be an extra beat of the heart from time to time, which is felt as a flopping or turning over of the heart; there are attacks of rapid heart beat which may be preceded or followed by trembling, sweating, paleness or slight fever. There may be shortness of breath from time to time, brought on particularly by excitement. Actual Heart Pain In some instances, there is actual heart pain, which is felt as a sort of burning sensation under the breast bone, or there may be acts Ing. The pain may be felt during or after exercising, and it is not relieved by rest. Patients with this condition tire easily, sleep poorly, and often wake up tired They dread any sort of work They cannot concentrate and are unable to control
States cannot prosper la n broken world." If thia country falls down on the Job. then the world sags, congressional statesmen are convinced. Inheritance taxes cut a deep slice from the large estates, as is shown In the Root estate, valued at about 30 million dollars. The heirs have already paid more than four million dollars to State Inheritance taxes and the federal divy will be more than five millions, or about 85 percent of the total largely Inherited by the grandson of the founder of one of the state's largest fortunes. If he can scrape up the cash, the young man might still get along on a little under twenty million dollars. o-—o Have you an idea for a book you'd like to write? If you're a Mid-dle-Westerner it be worth 550,000 to you. At least this sum has Just been made available by the Rockefeller Foundation, for the most creative new book on the Middle West. This may be a novel, a history, a biography or a descriptive account; in fact, almost anything except scientific or technical material. Why the Middle West is thus singled out Is not clear. But such a challenge to the writing abilities and the pride of Hoosier folk will not long go unmet. o o Editor A Publisher, trade magazine of the newspaper publishing business remarks: “Newspaper* are on the march. In no other year did national advertisers invest more of their dollars in newspaper space than in 1946. These dollars are but the first fruits of a harvest that stands ripe for still more productive reaping ... for a reawakening of interest in newspapers is visible throughout the advertising field. Last year's record will be broken with this year's use of space. Wherever merchant and manufacturer are using newspaper advertising, business is bound to be good. 0 o Mankind itself has to take the blame for its troubles and it seems that over the past <.OOO years of recorded history, we haven’t solved the problems, or at least haven't learned the answer. Discussing the world's plight, the JournalGazette remarks: "The first step hi preparation for security is for the United States to put its own house in order. We need a healthy, united social unit here at home. That Is basic . . . Crime waves, racketeering, broken homes and juvenile delinquency are all evidence of moral illness. So Is a lack of faith in our way of lite and ia our Institutions." Let's get away from hatred and prejuice and live as friendly neighbors.
their emotions. The hands often feel cold, and the palms are wet. Dlstfness and faintness are frequently present. Similar Symptoms There are other conditions which may cause similar symptoms, sometimes with heart damage, such as an increase in the amount of secretion from the thyroid gland, early tubercu’osls of the lungs, rheumatic fever and undulant fever. However, by means of careful examination, it is possible to teii neurocirculatory asthenia from these other conditions. According U> Dr. Strong, the main thing In treating neurocirculatory asthenia is to rid the patient’s mind of the fear that his symptoms are an indication of heart disease. This of course requires that the patient have confidence In his physician. Quieting the Nerves Other things which are helpful In the treatment of neuroclrcttlatory asthenia are the use of barbiturates which act to quiet the nerves and which, of course, should be taken under the direction of a physician and In the amount which he prescribes. At the beginning of the treatment, tea, coffee, tobacco and alcohol are prohibited. It is not necessary that the patient be put into a hospital, and prolonged root io to be avoided. Neurocirculatory asthenia is not a serious disorder, but 1* one which may be eliminated with propw trealwedt
