New Asphalt Roof On Elks Home Here Roof Damaged By Recent High Wind A new asphalt shingle root is beIng placed on tho Elks home on North Second street. Part of the roof was damaged by the high wind that swept over the city a few •lays ago. The Elks home i a one of the oldest and largest residences ever built here. The history books state that It was built in about 1858 by J- D. Nuttman, who, in hb day, was the leading merchant and banker in the town. Mr. Nuttman later moved to Fort Wayne, where he increased his fortune in the banking business. More than 30 years ago the property was purchased by the C. C. Schafer family from the Niblick heirs. The latter family occupied it tor more than half a century. The place was extensively remodeled by Mr. Schafer. The Decatur Elka purchased the property in 1825 and revamped Die attic, or third floor, into an attractive lodge ball. The half block site on which the stately colonial-type house sits, has been beatified this year with the reseeding and cultivation of its spacious lawns.
