Report Lewis Ready To Trim Demands Willing To Reduce Contract Demands Washington. .May 28.—(UP) — John L Ix*wla wax reported today to be willing to trim hla contract demand* in order to reach an agreement with soft coal operatore before the June 30 strike deadline. The report* came a* Lewis prepared to begin separate wage conferences with southern coal products. Contract talks with northern and western operators have been underway for about two weeks. Informed sources said the United Mine Workers boss has his sights set ou a 25 cents an hour pay boost for his 400.000 miners. Rut they hinted he might be willing to settle for 15 cents an hour more, the same increase granted In many other basic Industries. These sources also indicated that Lewis might accept something less than the 10 cents a ton royalty he reportedly has demanded for the miners* welfare fund. The present royalty is five cents a ton. A spokesman for the southern operators, who represent about 25 percent of the soft coal Industry. predicted they might reach an agreement with Lewis more quickly than the other conferees. He said the southern operators had some proposals to make to the mine chief, hut he refused to divulge them until they were presented formally. The parties have 34 days to resolve their differences. The government's jurisdiction over the mines ends June 30 and they will be returned to private owners. If the owners fall to reach an agreement with Lewis by the deadline, the presumption is that he will call his miners out of the pits. -0 ———— -W’“M I * Entertain Senior* .The Adams County Rural Youth duh was host to all 1'»47 seniors in the county Tuesday evening at i a party In the junior-senior high | school.
