Giants Within One Game Os Leading Cubs New York, May 1? tl'Pt The parable with the warning that "the last ehall be fir*t and the firwt shall be last" appeared today to be the text for the National league and the St. Ixntl* Cardinals and New York Giants in particular. For the Card*, the injunction works both ways; they were first in all baseball In 1948, hut today are last in the leagtie-albeit showing xigns of regaining their former eminence. The Giants were last i in 1946. and today are the hottest team In the loop with four! straight road victories, two over the Cards and two over the firstplace Chicago Cubs. It was impossible today to say which would be most likely to fulfill the parable's teachings. The! Cards have experience, power and i proven pitching. and experts i never have counted them out of the race despite their miserable start, the Giants have the best hitting in the league, good defense and questionable pitching. The Giants won an important game yesterday in trimming the Cubs. 5 to 3, as Johnny Mize set a new league record by scoring in his 16th straight game. The major league record is IS, set by Red ! Rolfe of the Yankees Mize's two run homer In the fifth inning- his 10th fourbagger provided the winning runs as the Giants pulled to within one game of the leading Cubs. New York came out of the game jubilant, full of confidence and wearing the air of a champion. Just as important was St. Louis' 4 to 3 triumph over Boston, achieved when Ron Northey singled with two out in the ninth inning and the bases full. It was the Cards' second straight over Boston, which shows alarming inability to beat St. I<ouls or Brooklyn, the teams which must be beaten if Boston is to challenge for the flag. St. Ixntls refused to crack when Boston tied at 3 to 3 in the eighth, and loaded the bases on three walks off Anton Karl ip the ninth as Karl pitched too carefully to the Cardinal power. Pee-Wee Reese's two-run homer In the fifth inning paced Brooklyn to a 3 to 1 victory over Kirby lligbe and the Pittsburgh Pirates The blow was the first hit lligbe had allowed, and the Dodgers got only five hits in all, two by Jackie Robinson. Ralph Branca was the winner although he needed relief. Schoolboy Rowe got credit for his sixth straight victory as the Phils rapped Cincinnati. 8 to 4 He was batted oqt In the sixth, but had a six run lead at the time. John Wyrostek batted in four runs With four bits and Rowe got three hits and batted in two runs. Boston's Red Sox advanced to within one game of the American league lead by topping the St. Imuls Browns, 12 to 7, with the help of Ted Williams' grand slam homer. Paul Lehner hit a threerun homer and a triple as the

Browns came up with rallies too late. The Athletics whacked Virgil Trucks and Stub Overmire for seven runs in the first inning and. went on to beat the first-place Itetroit Tigers, 11 to 4. Four walks, mixed with two doubles and a triple, made up the big inning. Walt Masterson's four hit hurling gave Washington a 2 to •• decision over Cleveland. Masterson didn't walk a man and only Joe Gordon got to second base. Mark Christman batted home one run and scored the other on Mas terson's hit. The Yankees and White Sox didn't play. Yesterday's star: John Mize of the Giants, whose 10th homer of the year carried his team to a 5 to 3 win over league-leading Chicago and wiio set a new league record by scoring in his 16th straight game. -0 Building Miniature Golf Course Here Clark W Smith announced today that constructure nt a new IS-hole minature golf course on Adams street, across from Worthman field, had been started.
