Murder Trial For Youths Near Jury Final Arguments Scheduled Today Columbus. Ind.. Apr. I—(UP)— Final arguments were scheduled today in the murder trial of two Evansville youths before the case Is turned over to the jury. Bartholomew circuit judge George W. Long said defense and state attorneys would be given three hours In which to sum up their arguments. The trial is in its fifth week. On trial for their Ilves were William Price, who confessed fir ing the fatal shot which killed trooper Herbert U'. Smith, an I William Johnson, both 17 and both of Evansville. Both youths cornp’eled their ttsiimony last week. Today, they sat nervously in the courtroom, awaiting the outcome of their trial. With them were their teen-age sweethearts. Ver* Hornback. 16. Anderson, and Mary Ruth Ward. 15, Evansville. They were captured with the boys In a cornfield i near Shelbyville last Dec. 5 after ; Smith was fatally shot on a highway nearby while arresting the quartet on a minor traffic Infraction. The girls will be tried on mur 1 der charges later. Throughout the trial, the de i tense insisted that the shooting of Smith was an "accident." To strengthen their arguments, they introduced as their last witnesses j yesterday Dan Stine. 80-year-old Columbus gunsmith, who testified that It was impossible for "four nr five” bullets to pass through the single bullet bole In the wind shield of the youth’s stolen auto-i mobile. Prh e testified earlier. that he recalled only one shot ' la-ing fired. The state contended - that four or five’ rounds weref fired. * Also on the stand for the defense yesterday was .1:1 emit;--?. Joe Heckman. Anderson, who said | that Smith apparently steppe ) In. the path of a bullet which I’richad intended for the policeman’s automobile tire. i
