High Wheat Prices Laid To Government Grain Exchange tn Demands For Probe Chicago. Maroh 31— (I’PI— Grain exchange representatives today demanded a congressional investigation. charging that government orficials "seek to mislead the public" with statements that speculation has caused high wheat price*. The demand was made by the National Association of Commodity Exchange* and Allied Trade*. Inc., in a tetter to Sen. John J. Williams. IL. Del. The organization charged that government grain purchases for export have hooj-ted grain price* to the highest level* in 17 years. The letter, written by th< organisation's executive vice president, J, A. Higgins, Jr, said In part: "We believe that it I* . . . essential that federal official* he called upon to explain why they seek to mislead the public in belief that speculation rather that 'government scraping of the bin' Is responsible for current high prices and the extent to which our country Is leading support to proposals for world regimentation of agriculture. "Certainly there is some reason for the too frequent attempts to discredit the commodity trades in the eye* of the public . . ." The tetter charqpd that the government "may have entered upon an overly ambitious" buying program. The Commodity Exchange Association said that high prices were "the premium the American consumer must pay for our foreign economic op<-rations." “Federal official* should not attempt to discredit the commodity trades by the questionable tactics of sidestepping direct responsibility for the present high prices," it said.
"It charged that "conflicting statements” and '’shifting* pr*s grams" by government officiate had unbalanced the grain market. The letter to Williams said that government purchases would cut the nation's wheat reserve to alunit 100,600,060 bushels, compared with a normal carry-over of 235.000.000 bushels. 0 The' H) h)s>l master Is u more powerful untagonist than the soldier. and the alphabet a more efficient weapon than the bayonet.
