In Texas, there are 16,725 ranches witb more than a thousand acres, while MonUna has 12.753 and Colorado 7.389 of the four figure size farms. But a 100 acre Adams county farm will probably produce more foodstuff than a large Texas ranch. 0 0 It was two years ago yesterday that the American flag was raised by six Marines on Mount Baribachf. Iwo Jima. The photograph of the momentous event is classed as one of the historic pictures of all time. When you view it your blood tingles and you feel like doffing your hat. If Baby Has a Sudden Pain
•y Herman N. Rundown, M. D. WHEN a baby or small child baa a sudden attack of pain in the abdomen. Mother should not delay in calling the doctor. He will not hesitate about coming because he knows thst many of the coed! : tions producing such pain require immediate treatment in order to forestall much more serious conditions. tn quite young infanta one cause for such pain to what to known as pylork stenosis. a condition in which there Is an overgrowth of the muscle between the stomach and the first pert of the tatostines In such instance* the baby does not gain weight, Is constipated and remits forcibly The usual treatment tor this condition is an operation although some case* can be relieved bp the use of certain drugs such as atropine and pheno Barbital. Another cause tor such attacks, according to Dr. Robert Kether ford of England, is iatussuwep ttao. tn which there is toteocopiag 9f one part of the bowel onto another part ir this condition the n.by may a btoedy Stock Tbere mey be vmutttog Wt two

Veterans will have until Aug 1 to apply for reinstatement. Under previous law. the time expired Feb. 1. The veterans administration reports that the majority of veterans have permitted, their service life insurance to lapse, an act they might regret ten years from now ——o o— The Social Security Board has' brought before Congress a proposal to widen the scope of the present program. Its eleventh annual report points out gaps. It should be spread, they say, over “all common hazards of livelihood
among all groups of workers." Those not included at present are "farm workers, domestic servants, government employees, employees of non profit organizations and ail self-employed individuals.’* An extension of the program to bring these worker* a feeling of safety and assurance of their future might help. It will take time, however, to accomplish It. for Congress previously has turned thumbs-down on the proposals. —--- — On the whole, perhaps, we Americans get along with the Russians about as well as can be expected. They are a touchy and sensitive people, and these characteristics naturally show in diplomatic as well as other contacts. It does jar us somewhat, however, when, as happened recently, there came a Russian protest that Un-der-Secretary Acheson bad made remarks “Rudely slanderous and hostile to the Soviet Union.” Mr. Acheson's offense seems to have consisted merely In stating, in line of duty in the United States Senate, that Russia's foreign policy was "aggressive and expanding." o-—© It is libelous falsely to call a man a Communist. A United States Court of Appeals has so ruled. Say* the court. "The label of Communist today, in the minds of many average and respectable persons. places the accused beyond the pale of respectability and make* him a symbol of public hatred in violation of the statutes." This is good sound sense Label* of Communist and Fascist an* tossed about loosely, without mueff regard to their appropriateness. Usually when a man is called either. It means no more than that the name-caller disagrees with him politically, and that he lack* a vocabulary to call him other name*.
Once a diagnosis has been made the usual treatment consists of immediate operation and replacing of the bowel in normal position. Acute appendicitis is a fairly common condition and thus to frequently responsible for abdominal pein in children. In such instances there to not only pain in the abdomen, often located tn the right lower part, but also vomiting. fever and rapid pulse rate. The number of white cells in the blood to usually increased. * In girl babies especially, a condition known as pneumococcal peritonitis may occur and produce severe abdominal pain accompanied by fever. In this disorder there is inflammation of the lining membrane of the cavity of the abdomen wI th pneumococcus germs. The muscles in the right lower part of the abdomen are uftvn tender and rigid. Treatment of tku condition with panic ilila often wUI bring about a cure. In the aarty stages of liver infectious as welt aS in rheumatic, fever and typhoid fever, severe abdominal pain .may develop Other caaueo are tosmk> or rupture which baa be nemo obstructed, twisting of the testes and tpllamWttoh of m. tyrnph gtsMs hdje* 84 wiuia ti®
