Proposes Boost In Truck License Fees Gasoline Tax Hike Action Is Deferred Indianapolis. Jan 23 — (UPI — The Republican majority's policy committee today approved "in principle" legislation increasing state license fees on trucks and ' commercial vehicles, but deferred l action on n proposed one-cent-fl-gallon gasoline tax boost. Spokesman tor the state high way department told the committee that both the higher gas tax tnd increased license fees were necessary to provide funds for highway work. The state gas tax ' now is four cents a gallon. Policy committee members said ! the proposed lax lioost would not be considered until the “overall ■ budget" picture was surveyed. John Lauer, chairman As the highway department, said the ■ truck fees would be computed on a "gross weight" basis to include loads which trucks normally carry. License fees now are charged \ »n the basis of the weight of the . truck when manufactured. Lauer said such a plan would help to offset the department's i reported deficit of "more than tio.ooo.ooo" in its building program fund. Lauer estimated that the higher truck license fees would realise some |2,500,000 annually. " o — More than 58.000.(100.000 quart* of milk were produced In the (.Tatted Statefl in 1945. compared with 8.000.000.0 VJ In the United Kingdom. 8,000.000,000 in Canada, and 4,500,000.000 in Australia.
