Firemen told Miller the smoke was too dense for him to re-enter the control booth, hut the switch tender insisted he was the only person who knew, how to shut off the automatic controls and turn them over to manual operation. Miller climbed the hot rungs through clouds of smoke, entered his “office,*’ and cut the switches. While firemen battled the flumes with chemicals. Miller began the trip down the ladder. A few feet from the bottom he stumbled and fell, unconscious, to the ground. His wife and daughter found him there, a puhnotor squad unsuccess fully trying to restore hit? life.
