K ...i- i... Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lessou, A Letter on Christian Brotherhood. Philemon, for Sunday, Decern Iter 15. Paul's only personal letter preserved Is thia one lo Philemon, a man of wealth, who had been converted and who organized a church In his homo town vs Colloasae. One of his slavei. Onesimus, ran and wai converted under the preaching i of Paul io Home. Paul would teach I Christian brotherhood by return- , Ing Onesimus to Philemon. j Vs. 4,5. "I thank my God, making mention of you always in my pray- ’ ars, hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord JeNus, and toward all aalnts.'* We ought to thank God not only for gifts bestowed upon ourselves but for those bestowed on others. Here is good example of the value of letter and newspaper publicity of the right eort. V 6. “That the communications of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledgeing of every good gift which la In you in Christ Jesus.'* Our faith should so work in the church and society that the world will take notice of It. Due credit must be given to the Lord for the Christian faith one possesses. V.7. “For we nave sreat Joy and consolation in thy love, because the jewels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. There is no sweeter joy than that which comes from the knowledge that there will be more people in heaven because we hate been faithful. V. 5.9. Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Chris, to enjoin thee that which is convenient, yet for Loves sake I rather beseech you, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.’' Paul proceeded with the tact as he was about to ask a favor not for himself but tor another. His appeal favor for the favor about to lie made Is strenghened by the fact that Paul's motive was love; he was ageing and imprisoned Vs.lo.il. “I beseech thee for my 'son Onesimus. whom I have begotten in my bonds; which In time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and me." Paul sought the salvation of every one and especially of the wayward. Our religion, if genuinely received and practiced, makes us all more profitable to the world and to each other. Discussion Questions Sunday School Lesson Discussion Questions on the Sunday School la*Mon, A Letter on Christian Brotherhood, Philemon, for Sunday, December 15. 1. How account for so little In the Bible against slavery? 2. What is the difference between a neighbarhood of nations and a brotherhood of nations? 3. What Christian principle guides in making wrongs right? 4. What is It that makes most effective one's Influence? 5. What does today's lesson teach about the duty of home and foreign missions? o — Clerious Says: Clericus says: ' True freedom Is an inner matter of the heart. Men outwardly free are Inwardly bound, it sin has laid hold on their wills On the other hand, men outwardly bound ars inwardly free If Christ by his spirit has made them so."

>, V. 12. "Whom I have sent again; i thou therefore receive him. that , fa mine own bowels." Christianity is s progressive development. In . the time of Psul slavery was s psrt i of the recognized legs), social relation. However Christian brotheri hood If practiced will do away with i slavery. Paul's heart of which bowels is a symbol was "ynomous with Onesimus. V 1.3. “Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead be might have ministered unto me in bonds of the gospel.'* Paul gives credit to Philemon In declaring true Christian brotherhood that existed between them. Now the same brotherhood may be expressed between Philemon the muster and Onesimus the slave. V. 14. “But without thy mind 1 do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly." Paul taught that our giving, our benevolences, should not be of necessity, but of love. V. 15. “For perhaps, he thsretors departed for a season, that thou shouidest receive him forever.” Here is an example of good coming out of what seemed to be wrong. V 16. “Not now as a servant but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me. but how much more to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord.” Christianity changes spiritual relations.but does not release moral obligations. Paul surrenders hie spiritual son for the making of a larger brotherhood just as many homes surrendered their sons for a world brotherhood V. 17. "If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. Christian brotherhood is tested by the way mutual friends are treated. V.lB. " if he hath wronged tbee, or owi-th thee aught, put that on mine account." If restitution be neceuary and sice Onesimus had nothing with which to pay, Paul offers to make full payment; so he is a practical brother. Vs. 19,20, I Paul have written it with my own hand, 1 will repay It; albeit i do not say to thee bow thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord; refresh my bowels in tbs Lord." Paul's joy will be determined by Philemon accepting Onesimus as a Christian brother. The greatest Joy that can come to the United States is a world Christian brotherhood. |* DO YOU KNOW? *| ♦ — ♦ 1. How is possession of wisdom I to be made known? 2.
