This Is Washington and Lee at Islington, Va, which is campaigning to raise |3.000,non to commemorate its 200th year in 1949. o o— Santa Claus will no doubt be glad he didn't dispone of his reindeer. for traveling by train or other modern means is so curtailed, he couldn't make it otherwise even if he used one of the 700 mile per hour planes. o o- — Admiral Byrd Is on his way to the south pole accompanied by the largest force of scientists and other esprrts ever to attempt such an inventory of new lands. Perhaps they can find some coal or oil deposits down there. o —o —- Taylorsville and Decatur, Illinois are in a hot controversy as to which should be called the "Soy lieau capita ot the world." Symptons Are Often Confusing
By Herman N. Bundesen M.D. The diaphrag n U the large, sneath-like muscle which separates the abdominal and cheat cavities In addition, it serves a eur moat important aid to breathing. Naturally. when mo important a structure becomes Inflamed, symptoms are likely to be severe. The condition is more hazardous because it may l>e mistaken for a variety of other things—pleurisy or inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity, pneumonia, appendicitis or gallbladder disease, thus leading to improper treatment or even to operation, which will be futile and perhaps dangerous. Pain In the Side The symptoms caused by inflammation of the d.tphragm include pain on the affected side when the patient breathes In. There are seme lessening of the movement of the lower part of the chest, Jerky spasms of the rib edge when the patient breathes tn. and pain In the shoulder. In some cases there is also some stiffness and imin in the right upper part of the abdomen. When the patient is examined by X-ray It shows that the diaphragm on one side is raised and is either partly or completely immovable. According to Dr. M nas Joanuides of Chicago, inflammation ol the diaphragm may follow a cold
Dr. R. H. Miller, popular and well known educator of Worth Manchester, will be the principal lecturer at the teacher's institute to be held at the Lincoln school in this city tomorrow. Dr. Miller Is recognized as a mid west leader, minister and author and his talks will be of interest and value to those who attend o 0 It's time for some real action on coal production. Cursing Lewis or punishing him still does not bring the fuel so badly needed. It seems that something could be done to prevent the nation's business from going Into a complete nose dive and that it ought to be done now. If the miners won t work, it may be necessary to call for volunteers to man the pits under supervision ot proper engineering and protection. The thing most people want now Is action. o o— Senator William F. Knowland has strange Meas The newly reelected senator from California thinks that Senate committee < meetings should be held in the open and that a record should be kept of the way the members vote. Does not the senator know that ( one hnprvtant reason for having , committees is to kill contested Mils i without having to bear respoasl- { blllty for so doing? That is true j ( in legislative bodies all over, state I legislatures as well as Congress. ■ o o Os all the minerals placed In the I earth, by a benefklent Providence, ’ perhaps the most useful, at least a for Man's Immediate use, is coal. There Is enough of it in the ground 1 and readily available, not only to , warm all mankind, but to provide limitless use of the mineral for chemical purposes of many kinds. For centuries man has satisfied himself with burning the fuel and using It for warmth and other simple purposes, by processes which entailed large waste. But more and more in recent years the chemical aspect of coal is enlarged, until its uses are often far more precious for chemical purposes than for mere beat. — o o— Those old-fashioued believers in a democracy that permits the people most concerned to have a voice in their government are doomed to a period of silence when the 85th session of the Indiana General Assembly convenes January 9. The announcement of the Republican legislative steering committee that no public hearings would be held on bills presented to the 1947 session precludes any opportunity for the citizens of Indiana to make known their views on such matters. In breaking a tradition of many years in legislative procedure the heavy Republican majority has served notice that they intend to ride rough shod over Hoosier citizenry, particularly in reference to controversial legislation.
. oi a tevere chill. It starts suddenly I with a great deal of pain, fever ’ and rapid pulse. The severity of the symptoms varies to a great egt tent. If there is some lung inflammation present there may be -ome fluid in the lung. There is danger that the infection may spread Into the liver tissue, causing an abscess. The less severe atf tacks clear up within a few days . but may recur with changes in ’ temperature and especially when ' the air is humid. i As Condition Improves , As the condition begins to clear ! up. the movement of *he diaphragm is resumed. The damaged muscle fillers In the diaphragm are repiacod by acar tlasu*. After complete healing It is * often found that the affected part ■ of the diaphragm has become flattened instead of being arched. 1 Ao a general rule, inflammation 1 of the diaphragm Is not * difficult > one to diagnose if careful X-ray I examination are made. insofar 1 as treatment is concerned, all etI forts should bemade to overcome • the infection by rest in bed and ■ the use of the sulfonamide drugs > and penicillin if they are IndiI eated. Preparations may also be ' administered to relieve the pain Pains in the chest may be pro- ■ duced by msny disorders. and in I j every instance a careful study by II the physician is important.
