Noire Dame And Army Dominate All-Star Team - New York. Dec. 4 -tUPI-Army and Notre Dame, national co-cham-pion* in the collegiate football iraltn. led the way today with five of the II places on the 1946 United Press all-America foot twill team selected by sports edit on*, writers and radio broadcaster* from coast to coast. The colossal Cadets, who marched through three reasons unbeaten despite a ha|-racing stkre lu their finale against Navy, placed three men. their touchdown backfield twins. Glenn Davis and Feliz Blanchard, and their great end. Henry Fuldberg. Notre Dame, enjoying a post war resurgency In football in which it won all of Its games except the stirring <t to 0 tie with Army, was represented by its brainy quarterback, Johnny Lujack. and its mobile tackle. | George Connor It was a truly all-Atnerka team i with every section represented. The: midwest dominated it with four men, Lujack. Connor. Alex Ague of Illinois at guard and Wsrren Amllng of Ohio State at tackle. The east was next with three men. all from Army, while the south placed two, halfback Charley Trlppi of Georgia and center Paul Duke of I Georgia Tech. From the southwest, guard Weldon Humble of Rice wa* the representative and Buir Baldwin of U. C. L. A’* unbeaten Bruins at end upheld Pacific coast prestige. Four playeis, Blanchard. Davis. Foldberg and Amiing were repeat ers. A fifth player. Agaae. also was a repeater in a way—he was an allAmerica at Illinois in 1942 and again at Purdue in 1943 as a naval trainee, after which he put a war between the years of hi* gridiron career before returning to Illinois thia year where he led all guard candidates. For Blanchard and Davis, perhaps the two greatest back* ever to grace the roster of a single college team. It was the third consecu-1 live year of all-Atnerica recogni-, tion And as wa* to be expected, they led the ticket in voting. Half back Davis received 2.019 points out of a possible 2.310 while fullback Blanchard rated 1.951. There atoo was striking unanimity among selectors for the other backfield posts: Trippi received 1.594 points and Lujack. 1.733. No other player at any position came within a mile of thin quartet and It was significant that the fifth backfield nominee. Arnold Tucker of Army, the second team quarterback, had 1.079 points, far more than some of the first team linemen. Other second team men were Herman Wedemeyei of Ht Mary's, Charley Justice of North Carolina, and Bobby Layne of Texas in the backfield. Huber* Bechtel of Texas and George Poole of Army at ends. Dick Huffman of Tennessee and George Savitsky of Pennsylvania at tacklrn, John Mastrangelo of Notre Dame and Joseph Stuffy of Army at guards, and George Strohmeyer of Notre Dame at center There were four casualties among last year’s first team mon eligible for selection this year. Wedemeyer and Savitsky had to settle for second team berths. Bob Fenimore of Oklahoma A k M was out a lot with Injuries and received little consideration tor the halfback berth be won a year ago. Neither did the 1945 center. Vaughan Mancha of Alabama, a good man on a losing team. The voting was done by men who bad seen college squads in action In every locale, providing the beat croM-section of opinion possible to obtain. 0
