Rev. White witnessed the inspiring ceremony between Bishop A. R. Clippinger of bayton. Ohio, senior United Brethren bishop, and Bishop John 8. Staium of the (ormer Evangelical church, a* they shook hands and formed the physical union of the two church bodies. Rev. Union Accepts Offer From Large Packers General Wage Hike Accepted By Union Chicago. Nov. 26— gaining agents for the AFL Meat Workers union have accepted a general wage increase of 11 1/5 i cents per hour for union members employed throughout the country by Arlftour and Swift, the nation's two largest packinghouses, a union official said today. The announcement came as the CIO Packinghouse Workers union. representing 200,000 workers, called a meeting of its national strike strategy committee for tomorrow. The CIO union notified Its locals on Nov. 12 to prepare to strike within two weeks. The strike deadline was reached today with negotiations still in progress, but a CIO spokesman said the strategy committee would “meet anyway.” “They may set a date for a strike and they may not,” he said. "It all depends on the progress of the negotiations.” Earl Jimerson, president of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North Atnerica. which repersenta 165.000 workers said signing of a new master contract with Armour and Swift awaited only approval by representatives of the union's locals now meeting here. Formal approval was expected today or tomorrow. Patrick A. Gorman, union sec■retary treasurer, said the signing 'of a contract with these two companies, after 15 weeks of negotiations. would pave the way for almost immediate agreements with Wilson. Cudahy and Morrell. the other three “big five” packers. The union has approximately 55.0<H» members in the five plants. He said the agreements also | probably would “make it easier" .for the. Gorman said the AFL and CIO packinghouse unions had "worked closely" in their UM6 collective bargaining proceedings “in the Interest of the labor movement." He said the two union's demands were "quite similar and not very far apart.” Jimerson said the AFL union's bargaining committee had accepted the companies’ 11 1/5 cents proposal, offered as a compromise to the union's demand for a 15cent hourly raise. He said the new contract also would provide for a four-cent hourly geographical differential wage raise In southern plants and a two and one-half cent raise In some northern plants In smaller cities. These plants always have had lower wage scales than those in larger cities, he said.
