"She's never remarried." her motherinlaw said, "although I think she'd given up all hope, too." "I umhl to hear every week from Gene," his mother said, "hut in September, 1944. the letters quit coming. Then we heard that he had been killed In action." Mrs. Jackson credited the Red Cross with the discovery of her son. "A Red Cross lady came around three weeks ago to get his history." she said "They found him In that hospital. I guess they made him remember us." The Red Cross said he might be home within a few weeks. "I'm ail right now,” Gene wrote his mother, "but I don't remember much. I hope to be home for Christmas." Jackson said in his letters that he had been wounded In the knee and arm and had been a victim of amnesia. When be "t ame to," he said, he was in LaVallse. France. From there, he was taken to the hospital at Weisbaden. Packages which had been sent to him were returned and his pretty, brunette wife had been receiving monthly Insurance payments. Jackson was a lathe operator in a Mttncle factory before be entered the service. He met Esther at Nashville while he was stationed at Camp Forrest. Tenn.
