(’reamed Comment* on the Sun- 1 day School Leeson, Jesus and Hevereiice for Spiritual values. Exodn* 20 7: Leviticus 11:11; Matthew 5:33 37; M:i|k 7:5-34 for Sunday. July 28. One’s speech betray* the Inner life so that using God's name flippantly is evidence that man 1* flippant Profanity is man's greatest Irreverence of God; it destroy* the spiritual life of the one who profane*. V. 7. "Thou shall not take the name of the laird thy God In vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh hl* name in vain." Because the name of any poison brings to mind him to whom the name i* attached, any disrespect for the name is disrespect to him who bears It. V. 13. "And ye shall not swear by name falsely, neither shall thou profane the name of thy God; I am the Lord." God has no equal and there fore hl* name should be kept sacred. Spiritual life con slats In keeping the name of God sacred.
V. 33. "Again, ye have heard that II hath been said by them of old time. Thou shall not for swear theyself. but shall perform unto the Lord tby oaths." To forswear means to swear to a falsehood. The people had been taught that It was all right to swear if they performed tludr oaths, that is. if they did what they swore they would do. Vs. 34, 35. "But I say unto you. Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for It is God * throne; nor by the earth; for it is hla footstool; neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the gieat King." A mau that is truly spiritual possesses such a love of truth that there will be no need of profanity as a mean* of emphasi.. He will uot even use byword- as a substitute for profanity. V. 34. "WeNbr Mhalt thou swear by thy be< suse thou canst not make one hair white or black." Even with profauity falsehood can not lie changed to tiutb. V. 37. "But let your communication* be, Yea. yea; Nay. nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." Affirmation of a truthful man does not need confirmation by means of an oath. A man's honor is his word. V. 5. "Then the Pharlsso* and Scribed asked him. Why walk uot tby disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" Emphasis on mau-devised ceremouy detract* from the attention that need* to be given to the motives. Impulses, and desires of man. It is a sin to make outward <ieanlines* first, thus failing to meet the condition* for God's cleansing of the soul. V. 6. "He answered and said unto them. Welt hath Esias pr<e phesied of you hypocrites, as It I* wilt ten. Thl* people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart Is far from me." Jesus answered his critics by citing the word of God. the best way to meet all criticism. Some Jew* In taalah's day and In Chri«t'» day were hypocritical In that they observed external rite* but had not true love for God. V. 7. "Howbeit tn vain do they worahip me. teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Manmade traditions came to be regarded as even more sacred than the law itself. Caution need* to be exercised that we do not overemphasize our Interpretation of the Bible in defense of the faith

HOME EDUCATiON Christianity sod the Homs What do you find to be the first mark of Christian Influence upon the life of your native people? The question was addressed to Dr. 8. M. Rentier, native pastor of our Freetown church in West Africa, who haa Just concluded a year's visit to America. He answered without hesitation that the most noticeable effect of Christlsnity in Africa invariably is in the home life of the people. It make* a radical change in the etatu* of tbe wife and mother Where the home is untouched by Christian influence she ha* no right*, but is rather a slave in all things subservient to her husband She is not even permitted to sit at the dining table with him --should they have a .lining table.
