Warn Parents Avoid Tonsil Operations Vulnerable To Polio In Summer Months New York. May 13 American parents wane warned today by the National Foundation tor Infantile Paralysis to avoid, if possible, the removal of children's tonsils bofore and during the hot Summer months when polkynyaUtis epidemics are most prevalent. The foundation cited results ot a lecent study tn attfiport Its warn mg that July. August and Septemh#r were unfavorable for such op eration« in relation to possible polio Infection. The study, made at the Culver slty of I'tah medical school at the cApense of the foundation's Salt U«ke county chapter, aualyz ed Incldf-nte of Infection among i hlldren fJIX-Ing the !!H3 I'tah polio epidemic In relation to prior tonsillectomies. Results showed that children betW/en three and Ifi years ot age were 2«2 times more vulnerable to polio infection after a recent tonsillectomy than the general child population The group also was discovered to he l« times more vulnerable to a more severe type polio Infection than the av ora®e. It was found that 1.139 tonsillectomies were performed among Vtajfs IM.OOO children while the epidemic was in its ascending phase in July. August and S*-ptem i bi-r of 1943. During this pc tod. 2'il polio cases occurred In the general population, 232 being children In the three ut !*> age gtoup studied. In this latter group. 39 i-a»e« with extensive paralysis occurred. 17 being traced to children who had recently undergone tonsillectomies. The incidence of polio Infei lion among the tonsillectomlzod children was o.KH pi-rcent, against o 152 for rh*- general child population, the study disclosed. Significantly, the pert ent iticidance of mo i* extreme paralysis type ca-ips also wa< o.ln| for the group operated, lompured with 0,025 for the general child population.
