Jap Executioners Given Prison Terms Killers Os Doolittle Raiders Sentenced Hhanghal. April IS lUPI Four Japanese army officers convicted of executing three Doolittle raiders of Tokyo were let off tmlay with prison terms of five to nine years, a U. 8. military commission acknowledging that they merely canted out orders from higher up. The commission which heard the trial deliberated the evidence two days. It decided that Japan's special punishment act aimed at allied airmen comprised “unusually strong mitigating circumstances" in the case. Lt. (ten Hhigeru Hawada, former commanding general of the Japanese 13th expeditionary army in China, was sentenced to five years at hard labor. The same sentence went to Lt. Ryuhei Okada, a mem her of a Japanese court martial board, ami ('apt. Tatsuta Sotojiro. former commander of the Kiang wan military prison and director of the filing squad In the execution.
