Christmas Card Is Century Old The centcnnisl of We Chrisimss card la being observed this year. It was |a IK—just 100 yean ago —that the first Christmas card was designed and disItributod. Thia pioneer greeting was the creatioa of W. C. Dobson, a noted British artist, who was said to boa favorite of Queen Victoria Dobeon. according to tradition, made copies of his card and sent them to friends in London and elsewhere in the British Isles. The custom established by Dobson found numerous devotees, tn IK an English nobleman. Sir Henry Colo, commissioned en artist. John Caleott Horsley, to design a Christmas card for him. According to one story. Sir Henry Cole had received such a large number of holiday letters that he could not find time to answer them all Aa a moans of solving thia problem, bo called In Horsley and naked him to design an appropriate card. Horsley's first Christmas card depicted a Victorian English family envying the holiday. Except for the profusion of detail, the card to like many of the modern greetings. The traditional “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" was insertbod on the card, with blank spaces for filling in the name of the sender and the recipient. From this beginning a century ego. the custom of sanding Christmas cardo has spread across ths ocean to the United states where it has become a traditional part of the holiday observance. But there was another figure that increased even faster. When the Girl Scouts of Greater New York reported a 2.259 gain in membership, they also reported that S.OOO girls were still on their waiting lists. Greater New York was typical of hundreds of councils that found and trained volunteer troop leaders for their waiting lists only to discover new groups of girls who wanted to be scouts.
