Noted Song Writer Dies In New York Jerome Kern Dies In Hospital Sunday New York, Nov. 12 -(UP) The new production <»r "Rltow Boat" which will open at the Zlegr*ld theater Jan 6 will be more than a commercial venture. It will Ite a memorial to Jerome Kern, composer yf thia best-loved of all American mtsskal shows, who died yesterday. Appropriately eno ugh, what probably wa* Kern's last composition will be used in the production « new song for the finale. The 60-year-old Kern one of the top melody-creators for more than 30 years, died a' Doctors hospital seven day* after he <-<illapsed while walking on Park Avenue. He had wuffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He s.umt the last three days in an oxygen tent. The composer, as ruddy-faced and buetlhig as usual, arrived In New York, pleased at the near realization of a dream Bong <twld liy himself and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd. lyri, Mt of "Show Boat." to get their show bar k on Broadway where It first was produced in Drx'einber 1927. While "Show Boat" was Ute fineat effort of his Bong career, he composed the scores of many other famous chows. A few of these were "Roberta.*' "Music in the Air," 'Tat and t>he Fiddle," "Sweat Adeline," "The Girl from Utah.'* "RtHHiy" "Sally" and "Stepping Stone*.'' Much of bl* work was in collaboration with Hntirmc-rstein. K' rn was prolific. His first etag'! musical scon’ was for "the Red Petticoat" in 1912. In the next 17 years he turned out scores for 43 shows.
Born on New York’s East Side, the composer’s mother taught him to play the piano. He üb«o studied musk- at Heidelberg, Germany. He returned here In IS' 1 ! and for the next eight years was busy as a aongplugger, accompanist and allaround pra*tlcloner in tin pan alky Then came his first rfhow and quick snectw. gern went to Hollywood in 193! ami Broadway did iw»t see much of him after that, although he had three or four shows here. However, bis memorial. "Show Boat,” will be a product of Broadway. That's fitting ami Kern would approve. ■« Sis Mouths es Dsylfght Ths poisr sress include sll the lands of the midnight sun.
