Job Guarantees To Vets End With War • I Selective Service Provisions Cited Boston, Aug. 23 —(UP)— The guarantee to war veterans of their 1 right to return to their peacetime jobs will end with official termmation of the war, Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, selective service director, said last night. Hershey said that the provisions of the selective service act guaranteeing draftees their old jol* ‘ were passed by congress “for what was thought to be a year’s training period.” Unless there is additional legislation, Hershey said, the sections of selective service concerning job return will “be abolished automatically when congress terminates hostilities.” Section 8 of the selective service act provides that any one who leaves his job, which is not of a temporary nature, to enter training under the draft act shall, upon completion of such training and service be restored to such position of like seniority and wages provided he is qualified to do so and unless there is a drastic change in the employer's circumstances. Hershey spoke before 300 Massachusetts draft board members at a testimonial dinner to retiring state director Ralph M. Smith. He made the statement in response to a question from a draft board member. Hershey said he expected “difficulty” in the matter “because there is a question that some people will raise—of whether congress made a contract with its veterans —to guarantee their former jobs whenever they should be discharged from service.” o Missouri is known as the "Show Me” state.
