CHICAGO FIREMEN made this dramatic rescue when John Nichtow, 47-year-old painter, collapsed from a heart attack while working on a school building. Luckily, he was wedged in a corner girder 40 feet aloft on a floodlight tower. A fireman on top of the ladder is shown reaching for Nichtow. (International)

WAR CONTRACTS (Continued From Page One) curtainments, with its resultant widespread shutdown in production will suddenly throw millions of men and women out of jobs. A high ranking OWMR official estimated that 8,000.000 pereons would inevitably be jobless within the next six months. In mid-June unemployment totalled 1,400,000. Furthermore, he said, only the swift reconversion of industry can alleviate this situation, government cannot do it by public works, he said, because it would place the government in a position of competing with industries for materials. The overnight contract cancellations by the war and navy departments constructed by a small portion of outstanding contracts. Additional cancellations will be ordered in the next few days with virtually all of the remainder to be terminated on or immediately after V-J day. Contracts for experimental development and for food and clothing for the army and navy will be continued. The navy also was expected to permit the completion of a few contracts for planes. While the WPB plans to lift most restrictions right after ,VJ day, it will continue its controls over distribution, allocation and inventories in some very tight items. This is designed to insure some degree of order in the rush to reconversion. 0 Hanqs To Ledqe To Escape Fire Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 11—(UP) Mrs. Henry J. West today was recovering fro m the harrowing experience of clinging to a window ledge for more than 15 minutes while flames swept through her secoudstory apartment. She was rescued by a truck driver who backed his van next to the ledge so she could drop to the top of the cab. The fire, believed to have been caused by an overheated stove, caused several thousand dollars damage to the building, a combination drug store and apartment at twelve points. o Guard the quality of your leisure.
