SUMMON LAVAL (Continued From Page One) cidcd to hear Pierre Laval at 1:30 p.th. tomorrow.'' He overruled vigorou- objections by defense counsel. Fernand Payen, eliief of defense, protested that "Laval's appearance won't throw any light on Petain's affairs. Nothing will come of it. There will have to be time Io get documents in advance to discover what Laval is going to say." Prosecutor Andre .Vlornett said Payen'n conclusions "seem to me to be premature." He himself had said earlier that he had no wish to summon Laval. The decision was reached after the court had deliberated privately for an hour and a quarter. The announcement caused :i sensation. Payen sprang up. demanding an opportunity to study documents before Laval was called. The session was suspended again, and alter 10 minutes further deliberation Mongibeaux announced he was overruling the objections and maintaining :he decision. Laval, a bedraggled figure on the first day after, his return as a prisoner to Paris, was escorted from hirs cell of solitary confinement in Fresnes for the beginning of his preliminary investigation. He wept when he appeared for formal sealing of the baggage he brought, with him from Spain. His cell on the first floor was one normally reserved for ranking traitors and collaborationists, one nobody was allowed to approach save
