Fort Wayne Man Is Killed Last Night Auto Thief Slain By Missouri Patrolman Jndianapoliß, June 2u— (UP)— Indiana state police announced today that David IA. Rigsby, 26, of Fort Wayne, wae shot and killed last night by a Missouri highway patrolman when he resisted arrest while driving a stolen automobile. Rigsby, who was bora at 'Arcadia, Hamilton county, and once lived in Indianapolis, was shot by trooper Dorsey Arnold, when the patrolman detained him for questioning regarding ownership of the automobile. The car, stolen in Indianapolis June 18, belonged to Maj. Samuel S. Springer of the Indiana selective service headquarters. Rigsby was identified by state police as a paroled criminal who served terms in the Indiana state prison and reformatory. He had a criminal record in Indiana and Arkansas, dating (back to 193'8, according to the police. The felon was shot near Kirkwood, Mo., the announcement said. Missouri police at Jefferson city said that Arnold stopped Rigsby on a routine license checkup. The Hoosier told Arnold he was taking the car to a dealer at Rolla, Mo., the trooper reported. Suspicious of the story, Arnold took Rigsby to a telephone and checked with the dealer, who knew nithing of the transaction. Confronted with the story, the patrolman said, ißigsby attacked Arnold and the officer shot him. (Indiana police said that the army officer’s automobile had been repainted. It was gray when stolen, black when Rigsby was apprehended. The license plates also were stolen from an automobile owned by Haus Geiger, Indianapolis, the police said. They added that Rigsby was named in a state police warrant issued June 14, charging him with vehicle taking, and that he was chased by troopers near Fortville, Ind., June 16, when he was spotted driving a stolen car. lie last was arrested on Feb. 25, 1942, Rigsby's police record showed. o The State of Illinois spans almost the entire world in the names of its' cities. Among them are Cairo, Canton, Geneva, Havana, Kenilworth, Marseilles, Mount Olive, Ottawa, Paris, Sparta and Venice.
