Inquest Is Held In Fort Wayne Murder Baer Field Soldier Refuses To Testify Fort Wayne, Ind., Mar. 21.—(UP) —Charles Dodson, 26, a Baer Field soldier, refused to testify oh advice of his counsel last night at the inquest on the murder of Mrs. Dorothea Howard, 36, Mesa, Aris., another Baer Fjeld soldier's wife. An affidavit charging assault and battery with intent to rape was filed Monday in circuit court against Dodson in connection with Mrs. Howard’s death. Although military authorities were asked to release him for prosecution, no action yet has been taken by the air base's commanding officer on the request. The merchant policeman, Russell Burnier. who found the brutally beaten and nude woman in the alley, was questioned for the first time at the inqueist. He said that she must have been placed there, sometime between his finaJ checkup rounds. The scene that had been witnessed in the alley by others occurred about two hours before the round he spoke of. Other persons related how they had seen a civilian in company with the soldier and the woman during the evening. Two of them said that ouly the unidentified civilian was with Fort Wayne’s fourth rape victim the last time they saw them in the alley. This testimony collaborated with that the soldier told his officers and police earlier. Dodson said he left before she was attacked. Coroner E. N. Mendenhall, in his verdict, said that Mrs. Howard died of abscesß of the lung that developed from lying unclothed in the open. She suffered for 11 days before dying last Saturday. o Ignarance is Bliss If it rained knowledge, I’d hold out my hand; but I would not give myself the trouble to go in quest of it.—Samuel Johnson.
