Gary Schools Closed As Janitors Strike Wage Increases Are Sought By Janitors Gary, Iml., Mar. 9 — (UP) — . Nineteen public schools remained closed here today and 20,000 pupils were given their second holiday by a strike of 130 janitors. F. M. Oberg, business agent of striking local 123 of the Building and Service Employes union, (AFL), said no end to the walkout was in view as no meetings had been scheduled with the board of education. The janitors walked out yes- ; terday, seeking inclusion of high- ■ er wages, amounting of approximately $20,000, and a new contract. Their former contract expired in January, 1945. Charles I). Lutz, school superintendent, said only two of the public schools .in the city remained open with janitor staffs large enough to keep fires going. He said the wage demands of the union were $6,000 more than included in the contract the board voted to accept. ‘‘Their wages have been raised 34 percent since institution of the little steel formula in 1941,” he maintained. "The board has given all the allowances for extra wages and fewer hours it deems fair.” Oberg said wages had been raised ‘‘comparable to 34 percent” but contended the rates still were lower than “those in surrounding areas.” He said the union asked ■ boosts of $lO monthly for custodians, now earning $l9O, and $27.50 for janitors, whose present salary is $l4O. Lutz said that, under a recent Indiana attorney general's ruling, I contracts between' unions anil ■ boards of education were, declared 1 illegal. However, he added, the . Gary school board was willing to I negotiate a contract and had been in the process of drawing up the 1 new one since last July.
