Huntington Wins Regional Tournament
Berne Loses To Huntington In Regional Final Adams county's two-year hold on the regional basketball championship was broken Saturday night when'”the Huntington Vikings defeated the Berne Bears. 51 to 31, in the final game of the regional tourney held at Huntington. The Bears, winners of the Decatur sectional the previous weekend, staged a great fourth-quarter rally to eliminate the Dunkirk Speedcats, 39 to 37, in the second afternoon tilt, after Huntington had walloped Chester Center. Bluffton sectional titlist, 50 to 29. Huntington jumped into a 5 to 0 lead in the final game, and was out in front 14 to 7 at the first, quarter, 28 to 18 at the half and 40 to 27 at the third quarter. Hendricks led (the Huntington attack w|th 19 points, while Liechty was high scorer for Berne with nine points. The Viking will meet Kokomo, Marion regional winner, in the second game of the Muncie semi-final tourney next Saturday afternoon, iHlfqediately after the Auburn-Mun-de Central clash at 1:30. P.iebe won the title last night as his team lost to the Fort Wayne Zollners 68 to 58. Riebe scored 29 points to win the title over Bobby McDermott ot the Zollners by five points. At the beginning ot the game, Riebe had 577 points and McDermiott had 571. Both players had topped tbe former record ot 406 set by Chuck Chuckowit ot the Toledo Redmen In 1941. McDermott scored 30 points in last night’s game but was unable to overtake the Cleveland ace. The two teams meet here again tomorrow night in tbe opening playoff game for the league’s eastern crown. Movie Actress Is Overcome By Gas New York, Mar. 5. — (UP) —Motion actress Una Merkel Burla was overcome by gas early this morning as her mother, Mrs. Arno Merkel, 70, died, apparently, a suicide, in their hotel apartment. A night bell captain at the Essex House discovered Mrs. Merkel’s body about 5 a. m. after a night watchman had. smelled gas coming from the apartment. A heajry bath towel had been wedged under the kitchen door, police said. The 38-year-oM actress, unconscious in her bed, was partially revived by a police emergency squad and removed to Roosevelt hospital, where her 1 condition was said 4o be good. JACK KNIGHT, who flew the night leg of thi nation’s first transcontinental air mail flight from North Platte, Neb., to Chicago, died at Buchanan, Mich., on the 24th anniversary of his famous flight, which was made Feb. 24, 1921. Knight was 53. He had a record of more than 2,400,000 miles in the air without a seric-js accident and in 25 years he flew 18,000 hours, more than any other American flyer.
